The heavier gusts have arrived here now in the High Peak, 49mph and cranking up over the past 15 minutes at the Buxton weather-station with the models showing at least another 5 hours of this relentless rain & gales up to midnight.

From FB reports, Winnats Pass is 'dicey' with the gales in full-force up there and flooding is beginning to get more pronounced around the Castleton & Bamford areas along the Derwent.

Very much a tropical storm feel to it with the rain bands and very gusty winds  certainly not a night for sitting in the garden with a beer

A wild kind of night strongest gusts so far rattling through - can I swap tonight for last Saturday's snow please? 😉 😁

Ain't no rain shadow/shield here when the winds are blasting in directly from the West and the Irish Sea moisture generator is on...rain just piling up and gaining intensity on west facing hills.  Lashing against the windows here.  Winds very gusty now and I bet the Mcr Christmas Markets will be quiet tonight.

Rain furiously lashing down.  Contact up in the Lakes says there's been 2 inches rain in Langdale in past 7 hrs.

65mph in Buxton recorded at 18:50, surprised Amber warnings haven't been issued yet given there's a few more hours of this to come and it's the usual Christmas Pub-crawl season.

The warning was definitely justified, some trees down locally, including one at least across the main road.

Got to admit the outlook is kinda poor for cold and snow, not the worst charts ever but even so. I know even a week to 10 days is a long time in weather but some of the even more knowledgeable on here did say December wasn't going to be great until after xmas. And the core of cold would be in the new year where it might be very interesting. I think the cold we had not long ago was just a taster before the main course late this month onward. I would take a winter like 2012-13 which didn't get going until mid January. Turned out to be a good winter that with quite a few snow events. Probably the last decent winter overall. Might be asking too much for a 2009-10 though.

'Do not travel' alert issued

Northern has now issued a do not travel alert due to the weather. It says: "Where possible, Northern customers are advised NOT TO TRAVEL due to multiple weather-related incidents, and replacement road transport being very limited."

Looks like landings at Manchester Airport are also fun this evening, with plenty of go-arounds on FR24.
