Looks like the cold 500s are just being tipped from the NE over the UK. Increasingly unstable, would expect disturbances to break out.

This has to be widespread  -10 / -15 lows over snow coverage and -20 in prime spots..,

slack -8 air with a gentle northley feed.

Raw ouput says no, for what it is worth. -10 if to be corrected would be my guess.

Let’s see where ecm sits but I would suggest these are beyond the reliable. Not the overall nhp but what any detail will be.

It really does, amazing chart. Lots of snow cover I reckon - brutal temps for the U.K. 👌🥶⛄

To be fair those are 2m temperatures, which probably don't take sufficient account of geography. Stations in frost hollows or in the presence of snow cover will probably be quite a lot colder.

Does anyone know what model the BBC use for their forecasts? As looking at the EC/GFS/UKMO I don't see a low pressure coming up from the south increasing temps, and later "Wintry Showers" from the north?

I think with all the moisture in the ground, there would be some pretty bad freezing fog about, wouldn't be supprised with some places no higher than -2c during the day.

Snow would be widespread and disruptive with this set up low spinning up fronts in to the dense cold air wow let’s have it. 👌

The 12z GFS in FI shows the first-time potential for wedges rather than a collapsing GH:

That would be the best case for the UK once the GH dissipates.

Trying to find snow that far out is like trying to pin the tail on a donkey when spinning on a roundabout

They absolutely do take into account the geography - the models have heights, surface type, area type (urban vs countryside etc) built into them. But, they are bound by their resolution when it comes to that - so the GFS at 0.25 degrees will be averaging the geographical nature of the grid square over that, which is about 17km or so in our neck of the woods. So, it's not going to pick up small features, frost hollows and the like.

Not my point. If these charts verify, statements like the ones made are incorrect.

Meteogroup provide weather forecasts for the Beeb; have done since 2018.

Latest info i can find from Meteogroup, as below:

MeteoGroup uses a combination of three weather prediction models to arrive at the best result. These are the European model (operated by ECMWF), the American model (operated by US NCEP) namely GFS, and the British model (produced by UKMO).
