Finally figured out this is an ash tree, been photographing it at the start of each May for the last few years (dates ranging from 1st - 4th) and so far this decade only in 2020 (first photo) it was in full leaf by start of May.

The leaves on this tree come out the latest out of pretty much all trees around here. I reckon if the second half of this April was mild to warm, it would have also been the same, but alas it was still mostly bare last week (last photo). Today it's starting to leaf out slowly and should be in full leaf by next week. Today's lovely 22C with plenty of sunshine helping it a lot i'd have thought!

Metwatch  I wonder if the old wives tale will pan out?

Oak before Ash we're in for a splash, Ash before Oak we're in for a soak.

I know around here the Oak trees have come into leaf before the Ash trees, this year. In fact the Oak trees bordering the end of our garden were in leaf early this year. Probably the result of so much rain for the last few months.

Despite our flimsy high being place there’s a a lot of high cloud piling in from the west on satellite imagery. Will it be that or the sea fog that ruins tomorrows…

cheese I spent four days in Sydney in February 2013 and I must have seen about ten minutes of sun. Quite warm and muggy though and we had a good thunderstorm one night. Regarding winter Down Under, I can imagine it's pretty trying in the south but up north in places like Darwin it's basically perfect summer weather - 30C, low humidity and pretty much no rain at all.

Right. That’s enough sun and warm-ish temperatures. Looking forward to getting back to business next week.

Metwatch it's been an unusual setup, because so many earlier trees went to town with all the early warmth. Ash is one of the last to leaf, and with the cool down in April, it slowed right down. The timing of the leafing of ash this year is pretty standard, but what's interesting is the huge gulf between the likes of horse chestnuts and ash this year.

Another warm day here. Cloud did take a fair while to burn back mid-morning and then rebuilt again in the afternoon which limited maxes to 20C. Looks slightly warmer tomorrow.

22c was the local max here today. The warmest day of the year so far for this area.

Metwatch has it got 'ash die back'? Its wide spread across the country. Generally an ash tree with the fungal disease cannot be saved.

I can't look at the tree closely as it's a few gardens away but with a bridge camera zoomed in on it, I think it seemed mostly ok to me. Still produces leaves just fine in the last several years. If the tree had no leaves by June then it would be safe to assume the fungus has killed off the ash completely?

Here's a close-up of it yesterday evening anyway:

Aye Christopher high cloud from west looks like rain arriving, quite thick, may be the cloud from Scotland's rain

Metwatch the ash tree will slowly lose its healthy canopy and degrade from the inside out, pic below is what happens to its limbs.

With all the extra rain we’ve had in the prior months, the garden plants seem to be doing really well in terms of growth 🪴 🌺

 Josh Rubio looks great!

Another warm and largely sunny day, albeit hazy at times.  Think the milk bottles will be making an appearance for the first time this year tomorrow! 😱 😂

Very claggy and hazy here also this morning, with significant low cloud cover. Also a little humid. Not especially pleasant; it appears this is rather a "dirty" high, with high moisture content. A bit reminiscent of that "dirty" high at the start of June 2016 which produced 5 days of dry and bright but very hazy and humid weather - before the deluge arrived on the 10th and continued for the rest of the month.

What would be nice is for a cold front to come down from the N and NW and introduce a clean anticyclonic spell with clear blue skies and low humidity, but I suppose that's too much to ask for in 2024...

This May is turning out a bit like a May equivalent of August 2012. I say that because August 2012 was an improvement over the dire first half to summer, as is May so far an improvement over the poor first half of spring. For that, we would need more than just one short fine spell and the rest of the month a washout though

Such a still evening on the Yorkshire Wolds, not a breath of wind and warm enough to leave the bedroom window open tonight, lovely fresh air helps a pleasant night's 😴

It’s a bright and relatively clear but lots of high cloud coming in from the west. Not expecting temps beyond 16-17C today a seems very likely will get a sea breeze again early doors.

Alderc 2.0 real impressive 'high' for your area...big shame. Wonder why? Was it always only meant to be 15-17c or so in your area? Or was it downgraded? Those are literally just smack bang average May day-max temps lol
