*Stormforce~beka* Second year in a row that I've kept my coats out way longer than I'd like. Last year was also very cool well into May.

In Absence of True Seasons I know, it’s been pretty disappointing weather wise for so long overall, nice days have been few and far between. When I’m looking at the gfs the jet has overall been south shifted mostly with low pressure in the vicinity for weeks on end with the odd passing high that get pushed away too quickly, hoping this pattern doesn’t stick through summer. Next week looks promising but then according to gfs the jet shifts south again and we get lows over us

TheOgre One of the biggest disparities I've ever seen for May.

Talking about 22/23c and sunny vs single digits in the likes of parts of Cornwall, and a mere 10-13c and thick cloud across much of the wider South.

"the stench of humidity"?! Are you ill?

We've had a more "humid" summer like airmass come in but the dewpoints certainly haven't reached to uncomfortable levels, indeed. A few further north I imagine not used to it after recent chilly temperatures.

Highest dewpoint today here was 13C, air temp reached 17C despite no sun so more like an average dull July day. For me and most others, it doesn't feel opressive or uncomfortable until dewpoint starts to reach about 17-18C, and that is fairly rare in this country, only happens handful of days in a normal year. I suppose it is getting a tiny bit more common though than maybe a few decades ago.

What was the rainfall totals for areas that got hit by the torrential rain and thunderstorms? Overnight we clocked up 28.2mm of rainfall and unless I slept through it we didn’t get a thunderstorm just heavy rain But there was some torrential rains on the radar overnight, they must have got a soaking

First one, absolutely agree.

Second one, not so sure. It is pretty common here.
In fact, last year, I registered a dp of 18°C or above on 42 days.

joggs I believe the solar activity connection got largely disproved since then. Well, not so much disproved but demonstrated to be considerably less potent than AGW.

Hmm, 2023 was also the joint warmest year on record while also being pretty wet, but if that's becoming more common, then so willl those muggy days.

Would you happen to know the 30 year average of the amount of days where the dp reaches 18C in a year by any chance? Would probably be a bit higher on the southern coast than the Midlands.

 Metwatch

I don't have any info on official long-term averages unfortunately.

2023 looks to be a standout year though, when looking at my other data. If I include 17°C or above, then previous years have a lot as well.

The September stats for last year were quite something though. I recorded my highest temp of the year and broke my dp record as well. 😵‍💫

For the second year in a row we are inside the tupperware, while other parts of the country enjoy sunshine and warmth. Fed up to the back teeth of this low pressure rubbish. But it seems that it will change from day 10. Can't wait. PS The pattern won't flip until the end of summer.

*Stormforce~beka* It was cold here too. Horrid day. But then again...

It's actually cold out and about now in London with another wall of rain moving in. Strange for early May.
