  1. What a difference to that 1st week in February this year when the netweather site was in meltdown, with everyone having their own regional snow updates! It's only November; i've seen plenty of mild starts to winter, only for change to cold, snowy conditions to come. On the other hand i've seen mild, wet start to winters and that weather carrying on for the rest of winter!
  2. Your boss is looking at your computer screen, over your shoulder! Now get back to work instead of wasting worktime on forums!
  3. Absolutely chucking it down, here in north Bristol. Very very windy, as well. I suppose this is in for the night. Off to Dartmouth tom for a couple of days; hope the rain clears up, at least.
  4. Ian You've forecast; many on here have not. Fair play! I'm defo a 'coldie' when it comes to winter, so your forecast does not exactly tick the right boxes! But who am i to argue?! I'm beginning to 'warm' to your theory of a 'even larger teapot' though, or was i spoilt by some of the winters of 78-87? I was hoping that last winter was the start of a 'sequence', even though the snowfalls were condensed into one week in Feb (for BTL anyway)!
  5. Quite frankly some of the posts in this thread which 'hint' at winter's over are pathetic. It's frig#in november for pete's sake. No one and i mean no one knows what will happen over the coming winter months. I've seen many many mild starts to winter, but also cold starts. There are NO patterns. It's not worth comparing year to year. A mild November does not mean a mild winter, nor does it mean colder weather will follow later. Dec could be cold, but then so could Jan and even Feb. On the other hand all months of winter could be mild. There again a couple of weeks in Jan could be absolutely freezing, but then it could happen in February. Who knows?? Just wait and see!
  6. Chucking it down here in North BTL. We've had a number of very heavy and prolonged showers tonight. Been very windy at times as well. Autumn has well and truly arrived.
  7. TODAY!! It was forecast to be sunny with some cloud here in BTL. I was hoping to get out on the garden, my wife's gone to work, so dry a load of washing and guess what we've had loads of heavy showers and not much sun at all! So, how can a weather forecast at 9.15 this morning on BBC1 get it so wrong??!! Maybe some of the experts on here can explain. There was no hint of the weather we've had today in North BTL. I understand that winter marginal snow/rain set-ups can cause weather forecasters probs, but normal autumn weather that they forecast to be dry for the day and within 45 mins of that forecast this morning the first of load of beefy showers turn up! How did they not spot those coming??!!
  8. This guy is getting really desperate now and i'm sorry but i can't buy these kind of scaremongering comments from the world's politicans. It really is downright deceitful in my eyes. Trouble is some people will really take this doomsday stuff in and start preaching it at any given chance.
  9. Couldn't agree more with your statement SF. This slight warming in the climate over last 40 years or so could quite easily be reversed in next few years. And then we'll be back to slightly colder winters. Last year's winter was pretty cold in BTL, compared to last 20 years and the first 10 days of Feb were the snowiest for a very long time, but it wasn't quite cold enough for the snow to last or stay 'frozen'. If we suffered same weather this winter, but temps were just a degree or so lower we'd have a classic.
  10. Yet to be convinced, as doesn't science tell us that the overall warming and cooling occurs over centuries and man-made earth warming is certainly dubious in my book!
  11. Isn't the clue in the word "Global"? The antarctic and arctic, for that matter, are only part of the globe. There are other vast areas of the globe where weather/climate hasn't really changed over the years. Simple view, i know, but then i'm a simple man!
  12. Just spiffing!! My wife and i are at my nephew's wedding all day Saturday. I, for one, hope there's a big backtrack on what the models are predicting for the coming weekend.
  13. I suppose if we divide the summer into 3 key months; June, July and August. June was pretty dry and warm, July was wet and fairly cool at times, August has only just started so let's wait and see. At the mo i see it as 1-1, with 30+ 'minutes' to go. This summer, so far, feels 'different' because we've had two quite contrasting months in June and July. The interludes of rain/showers against sunny days appears to not have actually happened as a 'normal/average' british summer brings. Instead we've had the two types of weather in two separate months!! It was announced yesterday, for instance, that my home town, Bristol, has experienced our wettest July since the 19th century!! So i disagree with the member who says it's been totally rubbish, but also disagree with those that says it's been 'normal'.
  14. Looks like an average british summer to me at the mo. I can't see anything promising in the models for next 2 weeks. More of the same i fear. Let's hope for a change in August.
  15. Compared to the winters of the past 15 years it was a good winter for BTL, in terms of cool/cold temps, snow and frost. Although the snow was really confined to the eventful 1st week of feb. Compared to some of the winters during 78 - 87 period, the one thing missing was below freezing daytime temps for periods of days. To me it felt like a 'typical' winter from my childhood (i'm 47 by the way); cold periods, a few snowfalls and milder periods; although it must be said that the v.mild weeks (say +12C and above) seen in recent winters did not occur. The stand out fact, for me, was that we had cold weather for long periods from Nov thru to mid-Feb, albeit not the real bone-crunching temps seen at times during 78-87 period. The tantilising Q for me is: Does the winter of 08/09 mean the start of a series of colder, snowier winters (compared to last 15 years) over the next few years? :winky:
  16. Same here in BTL. Dull, drizzly, fairly mild. Roll on an early Spring, with some sun.
  17. Pretty decent cold/snowy spell for BTL and the south west. Compared to last 15 years or so, one would have to say "better than good!" Compared to some of the late 70s/early 80s not so good. why? This spell has had lack of deep cold that meant snow lasted for days on roads, as well as fields. Those winters from yesteryear also produced better quality snow (i.e. drier, powdery) and below freezing temps during day, albeit for shorter periods i.e. a few days, before milder weather set in for a week or so, before next blizzard. Maybe this winter signals the start of a snowier, colder sequence of winters. still i'm ready for an early spring; don't need any more severe spells with the Cheltenham Festival on the horizon! If Cheltenham week is blessed with weather like today, calm and relatively mild that'll do me! Winter's sting in the tail can arrive in late March, please!
  18. A few points to make, for me on this cold spell: (i) In the context of the last 15 years or so of winters, it's been the best cold and snow since 1995 or 1991. The fact that we've had about 4 snowfalls in the space of a week in BTL has not been seen since the 80s. (ii) Add into the equation the fact that it's been cold or v.cold since late Nov, with only a small number of milder interludes then in that respect it's been a good old fashioned winter. In fact even in my youth we prob had more mild weather in the same years as we had great snow events. (iii) BUT, to have 3 or 4 snow events in a winter was not uncommon in Bristol and West Country in a 100 year context, for example ......and NOT unusual in the context of my lifetime (47 years so far). (iv) BUT i still maintain that this winter, and more specifically this last week or so, does not compare to the series of winters we experienced in the 78-87 period. During a number of those years BTL saw numerous fierce blizzards, biting easterlies, below freezing temps in the daytime, bone-crunching night time temps and v.deep snow even in the BTL suburbs. Because of the v.low daytime temps that snow used to lay for days even on the roads, often hard-packed. The snow was usually of the dry powdery nature, with a low water content. But all in all, so far, a pretty good winter, compared to 'modern' times. Maybe it's the first in a series of severe winters
  19. Well all, it's been fab on our regional snow thread over the last week couple of weeks since the NW mods set the regional Snow Watch threads. Great getting those constant updates from all over our region, radar shots, etc. I guess these threads will be 'dismantled' over the next day or so, as the snow threat recedes. Hopefully we get some more action in the next week or so. Models still deciding what the next 2 week trend is likely to be, by reading the posts in the model discussion thread. Cheers all....until the next time!
  20. Just got up and our snow from last night has all but melted. To be fair the forecast last night did indicate temps would rise after the heavy snowfall and turn to rain. Last night's snow was very slushy....v.high water content. The higher up you were the better the snow.
  21. Just watched the 22:57 NEWS 24 weather update and graphics indicate snow until 1 in the morn, but towards dawn, turning to rain.
  22. Although it looks great outside, i've been outside and it's v.poor quality snow....very wet, rather than the dry powdery stuff....very slushy underfoot.
  23. Still quite heavy here, but as i said in a post earlier, it's very poor quality snow...very slushy underfoot.
  24. Just been outside to put the bin out for the morn and it's v.poor quality snow IMO. Very wet and slushy. Unless it gets colder in the next couple of hours i'd say it might not be there in the morning.
