UK Outlook for Friday 9 May 2008 to Sunday 18 May 2008:

High pressure to the north of the United Kingdom dominates at first, with lower pressure away to the south and west. Through the period the high slowly drifts further away towards Greenland, allowing low pressure to move into southern areas, and the easterly flow to eventually turn northeasterly. Although dry weather dominates, with some decent spells of sunshine, there is always the risk of thundery showers developing. There will be some over the weekend, especially across southern areas, and this threat of thundery rain or showers may extend a little northeastwards into central areas during the week. The other change will be in temperatures, generally warm or very warm at first across southern and western Britain, but expected to slowly return towards nearer normal values later.

UK Outlook for Saturday 10 May 2008 to Monday 19 May 2008:

Eastern parts of England and Scotland should be largely dry with sunny spells this weekend, although isolated showers may develop. Some mist or fog is likely across northeastern coasts too. In the west, a mixture of sunny spells and showers is expected, perhaps with some longer spells of rain at times. During next week, those more showery conditions are likely to spread across the whole UK. There is an increasing risk of heavy and thundery downpours, most especially over central and southern parts, as the week goes on. Further areas of low cloud and fog are still possible over northeastern coasts as well. Most parts will be warm, locally very warm, with light winds during this period, although it will cooler in any persistent fog and down the east coast.

essentially backing away from the cooler spell and making more of the showery set up early in the period; also not such a good prospect for east coast areas.

Next week, generally dry at first, but with showers developing again over western areas while most eastern parts stay dry. Showers could become heavy and thundery especially in the south. Further areas of low cloud and fog are likely over northeastern coasts. Beyond next week, showers, some heavy and thundery, may begin to affect some eastern areas as well Most parts will be warm, locally very warm, although it will be somewhat cooler on east coasts, especially in any fog or low cloud in the northeast.

UK Outlook for Monday 12 May 2008 to Wednesday 21 May 2008:

Apart from some showery rain in Scotland at first, most areas will stay dry and warm with spells of sunshine at first next week. North Sea coasts are likely to be cooler with some low cloud and mist around. From Wednesday onwards the weather is expected to become more unsettled with an increasing threat of showers developing, more especially in the north and west. Staying warm across most parts of the UK except for the areas prone to any prolonged showers. From next weekend until the end of the period the weather still looks like staying warm or rather warm but with showers around. These showers could merge at times to give some longer spells of rain and some of the rain could be heavy and possibly thundery.

UK Outlook for Thursday 15 May 2008 to Saturday 24 May 2008:

A warm end to the week for most parts with some good dry and sunny spells in Central and Northern parts of the country. However, eastern and southern coasts could be cooler, cloudier and misty at times. There is an increasing risk of showers for the end of the week and over the weekend, which could be heavy and thundery in places, especially in the south where some longer spells of rain are possible. Temperatures are likely to return to near normal next week with a mixture of sunshine and showers for all parts. Again these could be heavy at times with a risk of thunder, although the main focus of the heavier showers is likely to shift to the north and west later.

UK Outlook for Friday 16 May 2008 to Sunday 25 May 2008:

Although still very warm and mostly sunny at the start of this forecast period, there will be a risk of showers affecting some parts during Friday and over the weekend, which could be heavy and thundery. The main areas at risk are the more southern parts of England and Wales at first, the risk extending at times to other central and southern areas of Britain early next week. Northern Britain continues mostly fine and sunny. The rest of the following week looks like it will be less settled generally, with some rain or showers spreading to all parts of the United Kingdom. Temperatures are likely to return to nearer normal by this time, although some of the brighter, sunnier locations will still be rather warm.

UK Outlook for Sunday 18 May 2008 to Tuesday 27 May 2008:

This Sunday is likely to see some fine, dry conditions with sunny spells, especially across eastern parts, but daytime showers are expected to develop with some heavy bursts. Showers or longer spells of rain are then likely to spread in from the west or southwest next Monday and Tuesday. Rather unsettled conditions are then expected through the rest of the outlook period, with the heaviest and most persistent rain likely across western parts of the UK, perhaps with some strong winds across western Scotland. The driest conditions are likely in east, but these parts are more at risk of any thundery outbreaks developing. Temperatures will largely be around normal at the start of the period, but it should turn rather warm generally during next week.

UK Outlook for Monday 19 May 2008 to Wednesday 28 May 2008:

Most places are likely to see some fine, dry conditions with sunny spells to start with next week, however there is a risk of scattered daytime showers developing. Some heavy showers are possible over southern England, perhaps with more persistent rain in the far southeast. Northern Scotland and perhaps some eastern parts of Britain should remain fine, but from midweek showers or longer spells of rain are forecast to spread eastwards across the rest of the UK, bringing an unsettled end to next week and start to the following one. Temperatures will largely be around normal at the start of the period and cool on North Sea coasts, however it should turn rather warm generally during next week and perhaps warm in the south later on.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 21 May 2008 to Friday 30 May 2008:

Most parts are likely to be dry around the mid week with some good sunny spells. However, cloud and rain are expected to spread into the far west later on Wednesday, before spreading slowly to other western parts. Temperatures will be near normal, perhaps warm in the east. The weekend should start much the same although there is an increasing risk of rain reaching the east later. Unsettled weather is expected to continue into the next week although the heaviest and most persistent rain should be biased towards the west with the best of the drier and brighter conditions in the east. Later in the week there should be a tendency for the weather to become more settled in all parts as high pressure starts to build.

UK Outlook for Friday 23 May 2008 to Sunday 1 Jun 2008:

The south and west of the UK will be unsettled with rain at times, locally heavy and even thundery. The North and East remaining generally dry and more settled through into next weekend. Even through the rest of the bank holiday weekend and into next week the north and east will enjoy the quietest weather, although even here outbreaks of rain cannot be ruled out at times. The south and west are expected to remain more unsettled into next week with further rain, some heavy at times. Though there is a hint of a reversal of fortunes later in the week with the more unsettled weather with showers over the north and quieter weather in the south. Temperatures generally near the normal.

UK Outlook for Saturday 24 May 2008 to Monday 2 Jun 2008:

On Saturday and Sunday most areas dry with sunny spells, but rather more cloud in the southwest of England and South Wales with some outbreaks of rain, although even here there should be some brighter periods. The first half of the following week will be largely dry and bright in the north and east with increasing cloud and some outbreaks of showery rain in the south and west, perhaps extending to the northwest and southeast of England on Wednesday although with low confidence. Temperatures generally near normal or slightly above, but with sometimes brisk east or southeasterly winds. Low confidence towards the end of the period, but winds generally southeasterly, therefore warm and bright in the southeast with risk of thundery showers. Becoming cooler and more unsettled in the west.

I have to say that wording has me foxed, dry on BH Monday seems to be the idea away from the w/sw and after that again I'm lost to which model they are following, or indeed the larger scale influences.

UK Outlook for Sunday 25 May 2008 to Tuesday 3 Jun 2008:

Initially, the southern half of the UK will be rather cloudy and breezy with showers or longer spells of rain, with the heaviest rain and perhaps some thunder across southern England. Further north, it should be largely dry with sunny spells, and probably sunniest across northwest Scotland. By midweek, drier, brighter weather should develop in the south. Meanwhile, some cloud and rain may spread into northwest Scotland. Then for the rest of this outlook period, a more southwesterly airstream will bring some fine weather in the south and east with more cloud and outbreaks of rain likely in the north and west. Mostly warm, locally very warm in the north at first and perhaps in the south later, but with temperatures around normal in the wetter spots.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 27 May 2008 to Thursday 5 Jun 2008:

The beginning of this period will remain rather unsettled with bursts of heavy rain at times in southern parts, with northern areas seeing the driest and brightest weather. Throughout the rest of the period, as we end May and head into the first week of June, there are signs that the weather will remain rather changeable in all parts. Some sunshine is likely, perhaps more especially in coastal parts; though showers, and possibly some longer spells of rain are equally likely, which could well be heavy and thundery at times. Temperatures on the whole will be around or a little above average, and at times it will feel warm in the sunshine. Windward coasts, and areas which experience downpours not surprisingly will be cooler.

Bank holiday deluge?

Low pressure looks likely to move up from the south towards the UK during the next few days leading to some very wet conditions for much of the UK during the Bank Holiday weekend. The more persistent rain looks likely to spread into southern areas during Saturday and it is likely to slowly push further north during the weekend. By Monday the longer spells of rain will probably be affecting northern regions, with the south seeing some brighter spells, but also some heavy showers. In the rain temperatures will be well down and below the seasonal average. The unsettled theme looks set to continue for much of the country during the first half of next week. So the last week of spring seems set to be rather a poor one for many. Will this be the theme for the summer? Find out our view during the next few days when we issue our summer forecast.

Much of the country will end the week unsettled with showers, which could be heavy and thundery in places. Some more prolonged spells of rain are also likely, especially in the south of England. In the far north it should be drier and brighter with some sunshine. Winds will be mainly light with temperatures near or a little above average. Similar weather will continue over next weekend with further showers or longer spells of rain. The heaviest and most persistent rain probably occurring in central and southern parts. Drier and brighter weather is likely further north but still with the risk of a few showers. UK Outlook for Friday 30 May 2008 to Sunday 8 Jun 2008:

The coming week looks set to end on a much quieter note. The far northwest of Britain may be rather cloudy with some rain, and a few showers will bubble up elsewhere, but generally there will be a good deal of dry, bright and warm weather, and this will last into the coming weekend. The week after is set to see the arrival of the more traditional northwest-southeast split, often seen at this time of year. Many parts of England and Wales, particularly southern and eastern parts, are likely to experience some warm sunshine, and any rainbands are likely to be rather weak and short-lived; while further north and west, parts of NW Scotland in particular could see more in the way of rain, and stronger winds at times.
