UK Outlook for Friday 8 Feb 2008 to Sunday 17 Feb 2008:

Many southern areas of Britain will be more settled than of late with some sunshine and lighter winds. These lighter winds and clearer skies will allow patchy fog and frost to develop, the fog becoming widespread at times, and lingering into the afternoons. Over northern Britain there will still be changeable conditions at the start of the period, with wind and rain, and the precipitaion occasionally wintry over the higher ground. Later in the period, as we get to the following weekend, these less settled conditions in the north are expected to extend towards parts of eastern Britain at times. Temperatures will be mostly near normal, locally mild or very mild in the south, but becoming less mild later in the period, especially over northern and eastern Britain.

Many southern areas of Britain will start this period settled with some sunshine and lighter winds. This will allow patchy fog and frost to develop, the fog becoming widespread at times, and lingering into the afternoons. Over northern Britain, some changeable spells with wind and rain, with the precipitaion occasionally wintry over higher ground. Later, as we approach the following weekend, these less settled conditions in the north are expected to extend southeastwards towards parts of eastern Britain. Eventually, over the final weekend, all areas are expected to revert to an unsettled westerly type with spells of wind and rain. UK Outlook for Sunday 10 Feb 2008 to Tuesday 19 Feb 2008:

This period of weather should make a pleasant change to the rather unsettled and often wet conditions of late. High pressure is expected to dominate the weather across much of the country being centred close to the UK throughout the period. There will be much less rain, with many places dry, though there is a risk that parts of the far northwest could see occasional bouts of wetter weather. Cloud amounts are likely to be rather variable, though with some bright or sunny spells. However, frost and fog are likely to become problematic in some places, particularly overnight. Temperatures will be close to average initially, particularly in any sunshine - though generally becoming cooler for a time, especially where overnight fog lingers into the day.

UK Outlook for Monday 11 Feb 2008 to Wednesday 20 Feb 2008:

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather for much of the period. Many places will be dry, though western parts of the UK will always be more prone to the risk of occasional rain. Conditions could return to something more unsettled at the end of the period with some rain at times moving in from the west, but there is low confidence on the timing of this transition.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 12 Feb 2008 to Thursday 21 Feb 2008:

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather for much of this outlook period. Many places will be dry with light winds and variable cloud amounts allowing some sunny spells. Probably sunniest in the east. Western parts of the UK will always be more prone to the thickest cloud and the risk of occasional rain. Overnight frost and fog may develop, particularly in central and eastern parts. Temperatures will be close to or just above average generally, but where overnight fog lingers into the day it will be rather cold. Conditions could become more unsettled towards the end of the outlook period with breezier weather and outbreaks of rain moving in from the west, but there is low confidence in the timing of any transition to a more unsettled spell.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 13 Feb 2008 to Friday 22 Feb 2008:

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather until next weekend. Many places will be dry with light winds and variable cloud amounts allowing some sunny spells. Overnight frost and fog may develop though, particularly in central and eastern parts. Temperatures will be close to or just below normal generally, but where overnight fog lingers into the day it will be rather cold. Conditions are expected to become more unsettled into the following week with breezier weather and outbreaks of rain. These are likely to affect northwestern and some western areas at first before becoming more widespread during the second week of this forecast period. Temperatures should rise slightly to around normal values. However, there is still low confidence in the timing of any transition to this more unsettled spell.

UK Outlook for Thursday 14 Feb 2008 to Saturday 23 Feb 2008:

High pressure should dominate the weather until next weekend. Many places will be dry with light winds and variable cloud allowing sunny spells, mostly in the west. However, there may be isolated drizzle, particularly in the east, and overnight frost and fog may develop. Temperatures will be close to or just below normal generally, but where overnight fog lingers into the day it will be rather cold. It is likely that conditions will become more unsettled into the following week with breezier weather and outbreaks of rain. Temperatures should rise to above normal values both overnight and during the days. There is now moderate confidence in the timing of the transition to this more unsettled spell.

UK Outlook for Friday 15 Feb 2008 to Sunday 24 Feb 2008:

High pressure is likely to dominate the weather until later next weekend. Many places will be dry with largely cloudy skies, some brighter conditions most likely in sheltered areas of northern Britain. There may be isolated drizzle, particularly in the east and south, and overnight frost and fog may develop. Temperatures will be close to or just below normal generally, but where overnight fog lingers into the day it will be rather cold. It is likely that conditions will become more unsettled from later next weekend and into the following week with an increased risk of rain or showers spreading into western areas. Temperatures should begin to rise to above normal values both overnight and during the days, in western parts first then over subsequent days in the east.

UK Outlook for Saturday 16 Feb 2008 to Monday 25 Feb 2008:

High pressure is likely to dominate the weather until the end of the period. Many places will be dry with largely cloudy skies, some brighter conditions most likely in sheltered areas of northern Britain. There may be isolated drizzle, particularly in the east and south, and overnight frost and fog may develop under the clearer spells. Temperatures will be close to or just below normal generally, but where overnight fog lingers into the day it will be rather cold. Conditions could start to become more unsettled into the beginning of the following week with an increased risk of rain or showers spreading into western and more particularly, northwestern areas with a subsequent rise in temperatures expected.

UK Outlook for Sunday 17 Feb 2008 to Tuesday 26 Feb 2008:

High pressure will continue to dominate the weather across much of this period at first. Clear or sunny skies are expected to return to many places at first, though more cloud could develop again during the first half of next week. Temperatures are likely to be around, or perhaps a little below average with some night frosts and fog. During the second half of the week there is likely to be a slow transition to more unsettled conditions from the west or northwest, though southern parts of the UK could still see some good drier and brighter spells. Temperatures will return close to or a little above average with the highest risk of strong winds in the north.

UK Outlook for Monday 18 Feb 2008 to Wednesday 27 Feb 2008:

High pressure will continue to dominate during the first half of this period with many areas dry. There will be plenty of sunshine to start with, but no doubt cloudier skies will return at times. Temperatures during the first half of the period will be around, or perhaps a little below average, with some night frosts and fog. During the second half of the period (from about the 22nd), there will be a gradual transition to more unsettled conditions from the west or northwest, although southern parts of the UK should continue to see drier and brighter spells as this happens. Temperatures will rise during this period becoming mainly near or above average, with the greatest risk of strong winds in the north.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 19 Feb 2008 to Thursday 28 Feb 2008:

High pressure dominates during the first half of this period with many areas staying completely dry. After a sunny start there will be cloudier spells occasionally spreading from the North Sea, but giving no more than the odd spot of drizzle. Temperatures will be around or a little below average during this time, with overnight frosts and patchy fog. During the second half of the period (from about the 22nd), there will be a gradual change to more unsettled conditions from the northwest, chiefly affecting northern and northeastern Britain. Temperatures during this period will be near to a little above average, tending towards near to a little below, with the greatest risk of strong winds in the north. The end of the month looks to be very changeable.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 20 Feb 2008 to Friday 29 Feb 2008:

High pressure to the south should bring largely fine, dry and bright or sunny conditions across southern and many eastern parts of the UK during this period, and there are likely to be overnight frosts and some early fog patches under any clear skies. However, occasional cloudier interludes with a little light rain may move across these parts at times and these wetter spells are increasingly likely later in the forecast period. Meanwhile, lower pressure and a rather breezy west or southwesterly airflow will bring rather cloudy conditions with rain at times to northern and some western parts of the UK, perhaps with some heavy rain at times in the northwest, and snow on the Scottish mountains. Temperatures will be near normal generally, perhaps locally mild.

tks Stuart as always for these updates.

Interesting discovery the other day, I'm told from the Met O that they have a numerical model that runs out to 32 days!

Not yet had that verified.

UK Outlook for Saturday 23 Feb 2008 to Monday 3 Mar 2008:

High pressure to the south should bring mostly fine conditions across southern and southeastern parts of the UK to start this period, and there are likely to be overnight frosts and some fog patches under clear skies. However, it will be windy at times and occasional cloudier interludes with rain may cross these parts and these wetter spells are increasingly likely later in the forecast period. Meanwhile, lower pressure and a brisk west or southwesterly airflow will bring rather cloudy conditions with rain at times to northern and some western parts of the UK, perhaps with some heavy rain at times in the northwest, and gales, possibly severe at times. UK Outlook for Sunday 24 Feb 2008 to Tuesday 4 Mar 2008:

Largely dry at first on Sunday, then turning unsettled across northern and western areas on Sunday and Monday with bands of heavy rain and strong southwesterly winds. The southeast will be drier with some bright or sunny spells likely. Mild, but likely to be fresher for a time on Monday. Continuing unsettled, but mild on Tuesday and Wednesday with wet and windy weather, although again drier and brighter in the southeast. Winds becoming northwesterly on Wednesday and Thursday with risk of wintry showers over northern hills, becoming generally chilly. Remaining largely unsettled at times through the end of the week and the start of the following week with bands of rain or showers and periods of rain. Generally mild, especially in the south with some bright or sunny spells.

UK Outlook for Monday 25 Feb 2008 to Wednesday 5 Mar 2008:

An unsettled start to next week is expected with rain affecting many parts, this clearing away later. A few brighter spells on Tuesday but more cloud and some rain is possible, especially over northwestern Britain where gales or severe gales could occur. By Wednesday, many central and eastern parts should see generally dry, bright weather, with showers mostly confined to western areas. Through Thursday and Friday, however, a band of rain is expected to move eastwards across the whole country, followed by colder air and occasional showers. Indeed, the showers may well turn wintry in the north and over higher ground. During next weekend (1/2 March) and into the following week it looks like remaining unsettled with showers or rain. Snow and frost may also occur, especially across northern Britain.

they seem to be tending to lean to the more Pm type of airflow which GFS and the take by myself and GP have been suggesting for a few days.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 26 Feb 2008 to Thursday 6 Mar 2008:

Unsettled conditions are expected to continue across the UK as low pressure systems move in from the Atlantic. Some dry weather is possible in the south at first on Tuesday, but cloud and rain will spread across all parts. Some heavy rain along with gales or severe gales are likely, especially in the north and west. There should be some drier, brighter conditions across eastern parts on Wednesday, but frequent showers or spells of rain in the west may spread further east at times. That cycle of wet and windy weather followed by brighter, more showery conditions is likely to continue into the following week. The showers may well turn wintry in the north and over higher ground at times. Temperatures generally above normal initially, but near normal later.

UK Outlook for Friday 29 Feb 2008 to Sunday 9 Mar 2008:

There is high confidence for fairly changeable, and rather unsettled weather to dominate this period. The general situation is likely to be dominated by westerly winds, with high pressure to the south and low pressure to the north. This will give temperatures around or a little above normal on the whole, but still with some cooler interludes at times, particularly in the north, as is normal at this time of year. The weather is likely to see alternating periods of cloud and rain, followed by cooler, brighter showery periods. There are likely to be strong winds at times, again particularly in the northern half of the United Kingdom. The best of the drier spells are likely in the south and east.
