Any snow will be reserved for after midnight at Cleadon IMO, with the temperature currently holding up at 5.4C, only 0.2C off the afternoon maximum. I'll be surprised if I even see sleet mixed with rain here this evening, though Newcastle Airport is still registering a dew point of -2C.

dp here -2.6

4.3c here and them cheviots are having a marked effect on shower activity in northumberland. Showers tonight perhaps for the north of the region at best before pepped shower activity around midnight. Temps around 2-4c usually in the region overnight.

Really? It looks quite wet in Northumberland on the radar, and orographic rainfall is developing across the Pennines now.

EDIT: In case anyone saw that, I typed orographic but my phone autocorrected it :help:

EDIT 2: Nm, I see Isolated Frost has quoted me :80:

Say wha?!

It does indeed- but if you run through the animation you can see the cheviots taking a chunk out of the power of the showers.

As I suspected no snow for us in the north east today.

Nice and windy out there right now, hopefully the weekend might produce something other than a fleeting sleety shower!

Temp 2.3 dp -3.2. Wind extreme here right now but no sign of any white stuff at 260m asl in the northumberland pennines.

When the wind comes from the due west direction then I expect more showers to arrive here, otherwise, with a slight wsw tone, I'd say n northumberland should grab the white (and blue) stuff.

When was the last time the NE (lowlying) had an essentially snowless winter? [i ask because I've got a bad feeling this may be one!]

Nick mate- January and February have always looked like the months of potential for us! Although for snowless winters, 07/08 must be close in some parts, as may 97/98 and 88/89.

I was here 07/08 - I'm pretty sure I remember one heavy fall that year, but it turned to rain with about 4" on the ground, so you had to be quick!

So they're not common... here's hoping we don't have one this year!

Living in Newcastle I have to say the last two winters have been pretty good, albeit last winter was mainly 'Late November/December' and then nothing.

Events over the past two years have made snow/wintry weather fans greedy for more!

I'd be interested to hear what TWS and the other senior members here think about BFTP/GP/Steve Murrs predictions of looking east in January.

Cheers :drinks:

You might find this useful - it's a link to traffic weather sensors. SCroll to our area and enlarge - there's one in Ushaw Moor and another in Tow Law. One in Consett too - all on your side. You should get a sense of temps in Lanchester via those.

The last 12 months have lacked any significant cold snowy spell. I'd be surprised if this continues, next year hopefully will provide more exciting weather than 2011.

Yes - flurries aside there's been nothing this calendar year!

Not been great for the Pennines at all, even considering last NOv/Dec... for me it was the 09/10 which was the best I've seen the Pennines - up to a metre of the stuff - incredibly beautiful to drive through.

Had some sleety showers moving over Peterlee during the day. Was waiting for the bus around 8.15 this morning and it went very dark, the streetlights came back on. I thought I would have heard a rumble of thunder but we got a brief shower of sleet.

Very wild out there again as the wind has picked up.

Rather large band of rain/sleet/snow banded in parts of northumberland and cumbria- if it can progress than maybe some rain, sleet and snow for some ne'ern areas.

Dewpoint is -0.4c.
