Light snow - vis over 1km

Snow flurry - very brief light snow

Mod snow - 0.5km to 1km vis

Heavy snow - under 0.5km vis

Snow storm - steady or prolonged heavy snow

Blizzard - heavy snow and sustained wind, frequent gusts over 50km/h

No fake reports now then !

I know this is opinionated...so I may not be intirely correct, but here is mine.

I believe a blizzard occurs only when the snow is of a dry type (below -0.5c approx) and during very strong winds. The actual intensity of the ppn does not have to be that high. If the snow is blowing off the ground then the visibility will be low.

Take the Blizzard of new year 1979.... I recall that the snow depth was not that great, but the strength of the wind had blown it off exposed sufaces into collection areas (drifts) which level with the hedges down my road. I recall in places there was no snow as it had compeltely blown away into drifts. That was a blizzard , and I have not seen close to this since Feb 1991.

Atrocious conditions here with moderate/heavy blowing snow falling on top of the 15 inches of "old" snow.

I am declaring snowmageddon.biggrin.png

FWIW I think areas around Sheffield and Leeds will end up seeing around a foot of snow with some places getting more than that. This is rapidly becoming an event that could challenge Nov 2010 in terms of quantities of snow piled up in a short period of time.

Heavy ice pellets here now, better than rain i suppose.

Good luck all for the rest of the night.

Update. Snow intensity 6/10. Fresh snow depth 3.5cm. Temp -0.3c. Winds nowhere near strong enough for blizzard conditions. This event has exceeded my expectations.

Still coming down heavy here, shame its gone after tomorrow, still a week and a half of snow and ice on the ground is really good going for my neck of the woods!!!

Anyone got any thoughts on the comings weeks, seems to be a mixed bag in the model thread.

This is quite good for hpool, I'd say maybe 3cm min at the moment. God only knows what it must be like on high ground inland

About an inch and a half so far, still coming down moderately with fairly big flakes.

Still snowing here. Can't remember the last time we had a good snow event of a breakdown like we are seeing tonight.

December 4th 2008 springs to mind, had 2 inches or so here bringing the first significant snow since 2006!! Those years should remind us how spoiled we've been lately. Some people are complaining because the depths haven't exceeded about 6 inches at low levels generally, and there's been some thawing between snow events - I'd take that over 2007 any day!

Agreed, and there's a few more hours yet by the looks of things.

By the way for any fellow boro followers, apparently boro have signed kieran dyer, better hope he doesn't slip on the ice, that will be him out for the rest of the season.

Nothing too spectacular. About an inch or a little bit more added to existing cover:

Really coming down, looks heavier as the flakes are marginally bigger now.

After a slow start, this has been one cracking frontal snow event, this front may even clear slower than first predicted also!
