Thanks for explaining that and I have no points so I am happily at the bottom of the league so far. This was issues by the MO -

Dates Warning Chief Forecaster's assessment Weather Impact Matrix

Issued at:

Valid from:

Valid to:

A slow-moving band of rain, sleet and snow will continue to affect many central parts of the UK during Saturday. Further significant snow accumulations are likely on hills, with continued drifting and blizzard conditions in the strong southeasterly winds. At lower levels, some areas could see 5-10 cm of snow, though details on locations most at risk remains very uncertain at this stage.

The public should be aware of the continued risk of significant disruption.

This updates the warning issued earlier on Friday, reflecting the increased likelihood of accumulations of 2-5 cm of snow on higher ground around London and Kent during Saturday, and some temporary accumulations of 1-2 cm at low-levels.

A frontal system remains slow-moving across central and northwestern parts of the UK during Saturday, again giving some significant snowfall, particularly across high ground. The risk of disruptive snowfall looks to spread further south and east across England than on Friday, though in these areas conditions will be more marginal for snow, with perhaps rain and sleet becoming more prevalent at times.

If we get there, I'm the one eyed green alien! :)

Certainly little sign of gritting that I can see but with all the rain overnight, it would have been washed away I think!

Very light/fine sleet or snow at the mo, was a bit heavier when I woke up and briefly 5-10 minutes ago. Just a tiny bit trying to lie on the grass. My mum is staying down the road in Bagshot and they have quite heavy stuff with an inch on tables etc already, am going home today. It's almost amusing to see how quickly the heavy echos due on radar when they hit the Egham weather shield.

Moderate snow here in Epsom, settling on roofs and cars! I just had a feeling that todays "sleet" would be snow! Meto site still giving me sleet all day - will this now be snow all day?! I'm assuming temps won't be going up at all today and will stay as is or maybe even drop?x

Today is a perfect illustration of how nonsensical it is too say "the ground is too wet for snow to settle". As many of us are seeing, as the temperature drops and the dew point falls below zero, snow will begin to settle on even the most sodden grass.

Temperature now 1.1, dew point -0.1.

Gradually turning white!

Yep its all about the temp, dew point and how heavy. The midlands blizzard in Dec 1990 was a great example of this, with NW England having 18" of snow after heavy rain.

Anyway, couldnt have wished for a nicer Saturday morning, toast, cup of tea and heavy snow.

Still bone dry here. Rain today shows snow in every compass direction. Yarmouth snowshield on full blast and covering a large part of Norfolk/Suffolk by the looks of it.

Is it heavy anywhere? The only decent returns appear to be sw of London and are they snow?. Are posters seeing the snow heavier than it actually is?

If you want to know what heavy snow leads to, go look in the welsh thread !!

Heavy snow here, best I've seen this year! Wasn't expecting to wake up to this. Must be because I put the sledges in the loft last week!

Apparently alot fell overnight.but just a v light covering here.

It's now snowing icing sugar which seems to be settling better.

However my patio, road etc is soaked so I feel there will be no covering on those .

Especially as the light blue on e radar usually isn't anything much.

Which is mostly all it is.

Quite disappointed as I wanted to take kids SLEDGING.

Steady settling snow here in Arborfield near Reading. We have a good covering on the grass, cars etc but roads are fine.
