Hot and settled spell discussion and temperature reports July 2013

Recommended Posts

It seems a hot spot, has featured as hottest spot in Wales quite a few times this summer, don't recall hearing of it in previous years so possibly a new station.

Not so new - opened 01/01/1993, however originally a climate station returning daily summaries once a month, only upgraded to AWS hourly and daily data since 14/10/2010 so would feature in daily records from this point.

Very much agree, my Nan (bless her) made me laugh, she declared it cold and went out with a cardigan on, which soon went so I am told.

Cloudy here, looking at the satellite, it was breaking up readily an hour ago, but has since thickened once again!

The met office have now issued early warnings for Thunderstorms on Tuesday and Wednesday most of north west England and north east England are in the clear at this stage along with all of Scotland and Northern Ireland all other parts of England and wales are under a yellow warning- http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map&map=Warnings&fcTime=1374274800

Warning

During this period, the risk of thunderstorms or longer spells of thundery rain, increases from the southwest. The main focus for severe weather will probably be clear of southwestern areas by the start of Wednesday, when the peak risk is still moving into parts of northern England. The public should be aware of the risk of localised disruption to travel, and more generally to summer holiday activities.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

An area of low pressure is expected to increasingly interact with the plume of hot, humid air resident across parts of southern Britain. Whilst preceding days will have seen only isolated thunderstorms, the developing set-up on Tuesday and Wednesday, provides the ingredients for more widespread and energetic storms. Large rainfall totals, falling in short periods and onto hard-baked ground, may lead to flooding locally, with hail a possibility. As is common in such situations, not everywhere will catch the heaviest of the storms, and a few places may well escape altogether. The Alert intentionally covers a broad area at present, to cater for the uncertainties in the thundery focus, as signposted by various available computer model output. As such, updates to the area are highly likely in the coming days.

Hot spell finished here todayPosted Image The cloud thickening after some sun between 8:30 and 09:00 leaving cool and damp feeling. A few weeks ago it would have felt warm and humid. Shows what a steady bake does to ones feeling of heat.

Heat may come back Monday only time will tell.

Very different day here now. Increasing sun strength and cloud burning back don't seem to working together today!

Glorious start today, but steadily increasing cloud from the North East as per many reports. (my guess is Cumulus which has now merged to create Stratocumulus), around 90% cloud cover, still generally bright though.

Temps still 24c.

NW facing is the hottest direction, get sun from around 4pm to sunset, mine faces north so just as bad, get sun from 5.30pm, so hot evening

South facing must be cooler as sun is so high in sky it dosent really get past window sill, and after 4pm sun not in at all

South-east facing here with many big trees/houses shading us and the house painted white. Combine with poor insulation, solid brick walls, a hill directly to our north-west which we're built into (so we have no west windows at all) and you have a place perfect for keeping cool but also good at getting you up in the morning! But, of course, terrible in the winter - oh and autumn,,, and spring... and anything other than above average summer weather!

Cloud has increased and now its a muggy feeling 20.8c. Very similar to a week last Wednesday (10th) which was just as overcast with similar temperatures.

Bit boring & dull and a shame it fell on a Saturday - but still we've had a good run.

Poor forecast - went from very good to pretty rubbish. Lovely, sunny start, now overcast. Some breaks, and at leas it isn't heavy low cloud. and it's 21C so feels warm-ish.

31.2C max here yesterday. The clegs were rampant.A nice E breeze picked up during the day and kept the midges away in the evening.

So it was one of those that probably nipped my calf muscle yesterday evening! Certainly an increasingly tropical look and feel to things today - temps definitely making it easier to go about your daily routine. And more importantly warm enough still to be sat out dining al fresco, or taking in the sights and sounds :)Edit - sunny interval alert lol.. Edited by triple_x1

Hmmm, the dewpoint is about 14C or 15C in your area. Only the most notable frigid cold winter outbreaks would give a dewpoint that low in the tropics. :)

Very disappointing today. Was forecast to avoid the cloud and not only is it here but it has stuck around all day.

A potentially fine day ruined. Posted Image

But it wasn't forecast to be cloudy here, hence it is disappointing. It should have been sunny from the word go.

Having said that, the sun has just come out. Maybe I should moan more often. :)

Even though it's much more cloudy today, temps have reached 25/26. Bit of a breeze making it feel fresher however.

Such a relief to have cooler weather today as it has timed perfectly for my night shifts.

Overcast with a max of 19.9C. Not exactly cold but the moderate easterly breeze is great for getting the heat out of the house.
