A thoroughly gloomy evening here for mid July. Felt dusky as early as 6pm in the heavy rain. Feel we've skipped a couple of month tonight. Quite miserable for a mid July Friday eve, streets deserted on what typically marks the start of the high summer hol season in the Lake District.

In just a couple of weeks time, sunset will be around 9pm. Around half an earlier than it was at the solstice. 😂

I reckon we've got about another month before it starts to feel autumnal in terms of light. Sunset back before 8:30pm. Seems to have gone in a flash as usual, the nice lighter months of April to July nearly gone for another year. Soon be back to commuting in darkness before I know it. Gahhhhhhhhhhhh

It never really got to summer light for me. Only saw a few weeks in June and that was it. It's mostly been lost in cloud, cloud and more cloud so dark early.

Not noticing shortening days just yet with sunset at 21.26 this evening.  Will start to notice early August, but from mid-month, nights will start drawing in rapidly.

Its around the second week  of August I notice light loss most notably, marking the end of high summer feel and start of late summer.

That's a good 3-4 weeks away. Its a shame the next couple of weeks will bring limited lingering light.. the heady light evenings of late May - June already seem a distant memory. The feeling at 17 May is far different to 17 July.. best of the light on the way, compared to a significant chunk of it gone.

Yes, it's beginning to be noticeable, slowly. Exacerbated by the cloudiness for many of us, too. Having said all of which, that beautiful golden light of August beats the slightly 'harsher glare' of mid-June/ July, purely personally. I am a bit of a 'reverse SAD' merchant (love dark nights, the colder the better!) but the quality of the light is at it's best in May and August/ September in my view.

Completely agree. I’ve said on here previously that June light is very harsh, more of a white light than the softer light of, say, August and September.

I hate autumn, everything is dying and nights are getting longer. What is there to like? 🤔

And have you noticed most sun worshipers who sit out in for hours look older than their ages? Like shriveled up prunes.

Yes, that’s because UV is extremely damaging to skin. A lot of people don’t realise that a tan is your skin going into protection mode.

I’ve never gone out of my way to get a tan, I have a very fair skin type and don’t see any point in wrecking it.

Well I suppose there is a parallel to the human condition 🙂 Not that may be a reason necessarily to like autumn.

My birthday, beautiful colours, cosy evenings, getting closer to Christmas, less crowds, blackberry picking, peaceful walks in crunchy leaves, cheaper holidays as well as cheaper parking charges. 😁

I think each season comes with its pros and cons. 🙂
