A horrendous early week here with the worst weather taking place on Monday. Sunday night into Monday we received 40cm new snow, but by evening the temperature rose to +4 C with torrential rain. Nearly everything became flooded within a short space of time, as the snow piles on the sides of the road act as a kind of 'dam', blocking in the water. On top of that there were some large avalanches triggered due to the warm up, with a tourist bus narrowly missing impact and some communities (such as Hammerfest) cut off.

Finally I see some snow flakes in the air again this morning.......winter resumes.

Glad we don't get those sort of maritime influenced rapid changes here! Yes it's warmed up the past couple of days but thankfully we had very little precipitation and with maxes yesterday and today of 1.6C & 1.4C respectively and with a dusting of snow last night again there's been very little thawing of lying snow. Temps are back near freezing now and due to drop to -18C by this time tomorrow so we'll be back in the freezer again.

Heavy snowfall in Tromsø yesterday, some more showers this evening. Gained maybe 30cm, so over a metre in total on the ground in the garden (photo), which is impressive given the big melt earlier in the week. Stunning daytime light here today though viewed from the office at midday, and the return of the sun is just around the corner!

Nice pics. Looks like all of Scandinavia and Finland is going to get a lot more snow over the next week or so, your location in particular. Our forecast is for snow from midday tomorrow until Monday evening so will be interesting to see just how much we do get. I've just finished digging out and widening our access road so hoping we don't get too much more! As for tonight, it's another cold one.

I'm glad that I created this thread. I was gone for a few months so this being active is so good to see.

As for on-topic. Temperatures are currently around -6 to -10 in the South of Finland. We are in cold airmass but with cloud and some snow the temps won't get too low.  They actually said there would be another very cold time period but it looks like it will only be around on Tuesday with -20, otherwise it's not as cold as couple weeks ago. If the sky is clear which is hard to forecast, it can easily be cold so we'll see I'll keep updated.

Both ECMWF and GFS models show that there could be Westerlies returning next Sunday meaning that Southern parts of Sweden and Finland could see temperatures up to 3 degrees and rain. We had a very cold October to January. It's interested to see if the rest of the Winter will indeed be warm with snow melting earlier than it normally would.

Cold again here today with a min of -29.5C last night and -25.1C currently but don't think we'll be as cold tonight as cloud is moving in with snow forecast for tomorrow.

Milder weather moving in next week as Markus indicated however I think we could still have enough entrenched cold air and the lows track far enough south to result in much of the precipitation still being snow (at least here in central Finland), as indicated by the most recent Meteogram.

Beyond next week who knows what's going to happen but there are signs that pressure could build again and temps drop. At least today brought some beautiful light. Just wish I was a better photographer to take advantage of it!

I was really talking about Southern Finland. Most of this next low pressure on Monday will bring in sleet and rain. Maybe at the beginning there's snow but not for long. Tuesday temperatures are up to 3 degrees. Looks like the only parts of the country staying freezing is Lapland. Even you could get warm air. Most of the low will be snow for you. Not for us in the South, it's typical. Looks like after Tuesday colder air returns but South could still get a little bit above freezing. Looks like temperatures in Helsinki for example aren't as cold as they are today when I'm typing this right now with aound -15. Not even -10 will return at least for the next 2 weeks.

Sweden, Stockholm could be much warmer with temperatures up to 6 degrees in the beginning of next week.

Yep I agree. My son lives in Heinola and it looks like much of the precipitation on Monday / Tuesday will be sleet or maybe even rain there. We had another cold night last night at -28C but that looks like the last of the sub -20's for a while. It's still cold now though at -26C so it going to be a big warm up over the next few days. I'm wondering whether on Tuesday we will beat our highest maximum for the month from a few weeks back at 1.6C? Could be close but it looks mostly dry on that day so shouldn't lose too much snow.

There's a lot of snow in the South as well with over 50 cm of snow. It won't melt all but surely the rainand warm will probably still melt at least 10 cm of snow. However road contitions will be very bad so people better be careful.

Temperature already -6 in my area. Snowing right now. Tomorrow most of the low pressure will bring in sleet and rain. Road conditions in the South and West will be very dangerous.

Only -1 now. The next low pressure will bring in snow and by tomorrow evening there will be heavy rain with temperatures up to +4 degrees. It's going to be slippery because the rain goes down to already snowy roads. On Wednesday looks like we will get freezing temperatures again but it won't get as cold as it was a few days ago. Average temperature will be -5 in the South.

A fresh covering of snow for lapland last night , it turned much warmer in southern Finland overnight with rain and sleet and temperatures above freezing, it looks set to turn colder tommorow as colder air floods south again.

Yes, we had a snowstorm yesterday (see video below) but temperatures rose above freezing by midnight and it's currently the warmest day since the beginning of November at 2.3C. There's been rapid snowmelt here at our son's in Heinola, Southern Finland and a thaw even at our own property further Northeast in central Finland. Temps should drop back below freezing overnight but ice will be a big problem.

@ArcticBrit Excuse the stupid question are you in the arctic circle? I suspect your about to say the clue is in the name mate

Yeah, he's in Tromso. In the Artic circle and home to the Northernmost brewery in the world.

Incredible place. I'd love to go back. (Tromso, not the brewery.)

As Marcus above indicated would happen, it was a very mild day today across the whole of Finland as we temporarily dragged up the same airmass that gave the UK it's warmest day yesterday.

I recorded a maximum of 3.9C and just about everywhere in Finland was above freezing today. Even Apukka (near Rovaniemi in Lapland) reached 2.7C and Inari (further north still in Lapland) reached a temperature of 3.3C!

Surprisingly there was little thawing of lying snow here which I think was down to the sub zero dew points and subsequent dry air. We're back below freezing now but temps this high here in mid-winter are pretty unusual.

Two thirds of winter gone and this winter has been colder than usually so far. In fact January was fourth consecutive month with mean temperature below average. It will be interesting see what February has in store.

At the moment very strong NW wind is blowing in NW -Lapland. At the fell top in Muonio measured max wind speed of 35,7 m/s and the strongest gust was 42,5 m/s. These are extraordinary values for Finland even if measured at the fell top.
