Finally we have some agreement of a high pressure dominated period after the weekend with lots of dry and pleasant weather. The ECM mean is fantastic. GFS and ukmo looking very nice as well. Finally spring looks to arrive. Let's hope it sticks around for the foreseeable

Sun Chaser my area was saved predominantly by the last couple of days of April, which bumped the hours up a fair bit

Beautiful day today, not a bad start to May at all. Maybe this month can save this spring from being a total depression. Some have had a very good thunderstorm event last night so that goes towards this being a decent month.

Wade It's been a beautiful couple of days round here too, highs of 20.1°c the last two days, reached 17.9° already today. Certainly inspires hope for the rest of actual spring, not the sorry imitation we've had for the last couple weeks. No measurable rain since the 29th!

Apparently meant to be 19c later but considering it's midday and only 13c still, I'm not quite sure how!

Looks like elsewhere is fairing better whilst the South wallows under dross again.

CryoraptorA303  I'm at 17m ASL, Id call that pretty lowland lol

My Peonies are well behind where they would normally be at this time of year - I expect them to be 7-14 days behind 'normal'.

13C grey and damp - spring, let alone summer, feels a long way off yet...

Annoyingly on the side of cloud this afternoon, 20 miles north of here sunny but might clear up in the next hour or 2 time will tell, still quite mild and humid ish at 16C, so feels seasonal in some aspect.

Some amazing storms in the south / southeast last night, was fun tracking them despite not getting any here and a good start to the season like last year. Just would be nice if we could get a few weeks of dryness before more storms come up, a bit like last May to June I guess but with a slightly better high summer period🤞

After 1 day of May, Heathrow has less than an hour of sun and a quarter of the monthly rainfall already.

12th consecutive 50mm month incoming?

B87 Highly likely to breach 50mm for your area if the latest GFS run is anywhere near accurate

Wade 12 months in a row with 50mm+ is ridiculous. The previous record is 9 months, and we only average 5 months of the year with 50mm+ on average.

2024 will almost certainly be wetter than 2014 now, as we have 8 months still to go, 3 of which are the wettest months of the year (Oct, Nov, Dec).

2025 better be dry.

B87 less bothered by that to be honest as the rainfall came from a very intense thunderstorm. I’m much more bothered on number of days of rainfall. Hopefully with next week looking much better we will fall below the average for number of days with rain this month. If we are “above average” for rainfall due mainly to a few heavy downpours, I’m not too bothered.

danm It doesn't help when it's also overcast, which means the ground will stay damp. Not what you expect to see at the end of spring.

B87 Let's also not forget that most of those respective months have been below average sunshine too, or average at best. Wet and dull is probably the worst combo for Spring.

Just a woeful run of weather in all regards. Nothing for those who desire cold, nor warmth, nor settled.

Pleasant only for ducks, snails/slugs and moss.

B87 yes but I’m purely talking about the rainfall. I’m personally not really bothered about ensuring whether a month or a year is below average for rainfall from a purely statistical perspective, I’m bothered about how many days we get that are dull and/or rainy. Granted, over the last 18 months we’ve been much wetter due to so many actual days with rain falling. But let’s see how May pans out. It was bone dry yesterday except for a huge thunderstorm overnight that dumped a load of rain.

In Absence of True Seasons We need the sunniest and driest summer on record to even have a hope of an average year.

2024 will be the wettest year on record, it's never ending.

Really is quite surprising how different the weather is in the SW compared to the NW. Western Scotland is seeing quite the warmth recently, with 23C at Oban Airport. We've seen three sunny days on the trot with temps reaching 20C.. meanwhile it's barely in double digits down there.

This sums it up quite perfectly, an unusual pattern tbh.

danm We need <5 rain days per month from now until October. Even that would probably not be enough to stop us from having an exceptionally wet year. We still have October, November and December to come (1st, 2nd and 4th wettest months of the year).

Ideally at least one of the summer months to have no rain at all.

Frigid the SW have really drawn the short straw. It’s dull and cool here today, but the last 3 days have been warm and largely pretty sunny. Yesterday had a lot of cloud but brightened up in the afternoon. Two 20c days on the trot. The SW have been stuck under a weather front that entire time.
