Some very beefy showers piling through the last couple of hours. Some very heavy rain overnight too. I think I must have slept through the worst of the wind though...

A bit of a stormy night with gunshot noises as trees snapped on the piece of wood on farm road. Two weeks ago all conifers felled next to power lines leaving middle of wood exposed with poorly rooted  trees Can just make out newly wind felled ones behind power line ones.20231221_124132.thumb.jpg.4e07b70fadfd456ab1581feded03a03d.jpglk

I have a 3kw petrol generator at the new hoose. Handily, the previous owners had the meter box fitted outside, complete with a switch for changing between mains and generator power. The latter has a 16A plug, read to go into a generator. As we have oil heating, if the power goes off, I just need to switch over to the generator and everything in the house comes back on, including freezers etc.

Just make sure you store your emergency petrol safely!!

@snowidea Good link here which explains.

Polar stratospheric clouds play a central role in the formation of the ozone hole in the Antarctic and Arctic.

From the 12z earlier - you can see the temperatures currently above the UK at 10hPa. EC ensemble temps and also the record lows at 50hPa from MERRA2.

Pretty to look at, yet devastating for Ozone with the column right where we are seeing PSC degraded.

I have some experience in this area. 🙂

TBH, I'm thinking that with decent solar panels and a battery, the sun could supply emergency needs (and more) as we face south. But that's for the years to come as the CAPEX costs are big!

Wild stormy night last night with yet more heavy rain, violent gusts of wind significantly higher I think than the 48mph on the weather station as it’s slightly sheltered by the trees in a nor westerly. Brief but squally showers with a few wet flakes appearing. Early night after enduring day long hangover today after drinks with the neighbours last night..

Fair temperature spread across Scotland this morning from +11c in the southwest to -2c in Shetland. The Northern Isles are the only part of Scotland with the mean monthly temperature anomaly still below average. The recent mild spell has brought everywhere else above average after the cold start to the month.

And to you!

Not sure about 13cm but I’d be surprised if you didn’t see a decent covering by tomorrow. Shame Sunday is to be mild.

ECM quite chilly from Christmas Day onwards. GFS not so much at the moment.

Sleety pish is what i would call it... the odd big flake mixed in.. and my app is now saying 16cm overnight so now i trust it even less... i have set my alarm for 6am to check and if there be snaw on the ground im waking the kids up and going out in it, might be the only chance i get this winter...

Maybe 4 hours of wet snow at most before the milder air takes over, still an outside chance of a flake or 2 on Xmas day evening, think by next week we should start seeing some nice model runs

Pretty raw feeling in the wind but a few spells of wet snow earlier. The snow line has been steadily moving down the hill as the day's went on and seemed to be lying down to about 250m as it started to get dark.

My other half booked a ski session in at the Lecht tomorrow for a beginner friend - they'll probably catch a fair bit tonight but I suspect it could be pretty grim by lunchtime if things warm up as forecast!
