I think it will be below average, so 2.6c for me please. :)

Thought I'd be clever and wait until the last minute for the models to sort themselves out a bit! :)

More confused than ever now. So going for a conservative 3.8c.

Hope I'm wrong and its much lower of course.

Happy New Year to all NW members. :)

Best wishes and regards,

Tom.

Happy new year to you too a very cold one. :)

I think even I may have gone slightly too high on this even should`ve gone below 3c but I won`t change it now,got december`s just too high aswell when I went for 4c

Well I think it is very likely that we will kick off 2009 with a sub zero CET! Long may it continue!

Apologies for being late again, I keep forgetting about it until the first day of the month.

I think this will be a cold January by recent standards- probably a lot of cool zonal stuff with Atlantic weather systems taking a more southerly track than we've been used to in recent winters. My guess is 3.3C.

A repeat of Januray 1795 would be wonderful.

Ah thats fantastic! Thanks very much Supercell! Jan 1795 would be wonderful but a CET in negative numbers would suffice for me!

I say 3.2.

PS, I meant to post last night but was caught up in the new years celebrations, does this excuse me from the late penalty? :D

Looking at the way things appear to be going, mines 2.1c :)

Loraine, substitute the 'e' in 'mines' to a 'u' and you have an even more appealing CET punt! :)

I think 3.9C but i hope its considerably lower than that!

PS-This may seem a stupid/novicey question but could someone direct me to a website that has previous CETs for the UK from the last few months etc? I used to be able to find it on the MO site but its elusive now!

Thanks

To show the impact of the negative start, someone like Craig Evans who went for 8.0 is now effectively going for 8.3 over 30 days.

Considering that we are having a week of below or well below average. As you said, it would require every day for the remains of January to be well above average which - even today - is a tall order.

Well we are going to get at least 7 days where the CET will be averaging close to 0C, what happens after that is uncertain but a slow change to milder conditons over the month does seem probable but the speed of the change is what will decide the CET outcome of course.

Current CET upto 1st is -1.0c. The period 2nd-5th looks to average -0.5c. CET by the 5th should be -0.6c. Coldest start to January since 1997.

With Januarys such as 1940 and 1963, as examples, coming out at -1.4C and -2.1C respectively. I find it difficult to imagine ever experiencing such constant cold over a month with where we are after two days, or will be after five.

I wouldn't hold your breath...

You were far too quick to reply, SF. I accidently hit the submit button half-way through my post.

I find it particularly difficult to imagine such cold, being born at the beginning of the christmas pudding - Dec 1988.
