Missed Look North weather, what was the crack?

Mark

Look north said heavy and prolonged snow showers starting around 1500 today and right through to 1600 Wednesday stretching right down the coast and about 30 miles inland.

Some excellent lapse rates and decent CAPE for the North East especially Northumberland, if that band of cloud (stalling weather front) stretching from the Humber over through Wales was a little further southwest then the chances of thundersnow south of the tyne would be better as i think the upper sheet of cloud is chopping away at those beasts coming in off the sea.

Sorry for noob question, but what are lapse rates?

look north forecast over to the right click play. Hasn't been updated since this morning but still shows snow.

Temperature gradiant from 850hpa to 500 hpa the greater the temp difference the better for cumulus to grow into cumulonimbus (thunderclouds)

I've had to escape from the NW thread as I don't really have a lot of interest in what happens in Runcorn.

Down to -3.0º here right now and the Met Office precipitation predictions suggest some snowfall reaching over the Pennines this evening and through the night, but we shall see.

Interestingly, it has stayed below zero here since 8.30pm on Saturday.

Possibly 1 or 2 but nothing very heavy to reach cumbria she said

my guess it will be on a knifes edge anywhere more than 10 miles from the east coast

that means only reaching Newcastle? I'd have though they will penetrate at least 30 miles?

Hope so OON. Your warmer than here. -2.9ºC but there's a fresh NE wind gusting 25mph plus.

I hope so. 25 miles from coast here and it would be good if we could all share a big dumping to get the south off the headlines!

That's not going to happen. Even if there was a repeat of the Jan 1941 NE snowstorm which dumped 122cm on Consett, the South would still lead.

Ice days hardly raise an eyebrow at the moment.

An ice week, now that would be something.

I was in Basingstoke that night before xmas when the "Snowstorm of the decade" hit. It was terrible. So much snow! 3 inches you should of seen it!

4 inches of snow in the south= 4 foot of snow in the north !

roughly times it by 10,so 1cm would be the outcome.

To be fair to those in the South this does look an interesting event. Up to 40cm is very impressive.

The NE of England holds two winter records for the longest period of time below freezing in a inhabited area in Feb 1986 at Widdbank Fell.

Deepest lying snow in a inabited location 211cm March 1947 Forest in Teesdale.
