well after the thaw came the...............SNOW again!! pic taken 3 mins ago!!

Lovely photo! Sounds like we've all had similar weather today - a slight thaw with a long, light snow fall. It is still snowing here which must be at least 12 hours now but it is hardly making an impression.

Although it's on our pavements and paths here, the snow on the grass is struggling to stay put. 2.5 miles up the road however in Woolton woods we've just had a glorious walk in an inch or so of fresh snow! From the top of the hill we couldn't see the river, never mind the Welsh mountains, in the white out!

It stopped here too for a couple of hours but has started again. Temperature must have dropped too as it's now settling in areas where it had thawed away & it's certainly not heavy enough to have done that without freezing temps.

Still snowing and with 3-4cm of fresh snow. This should definitely last until the weekend. :p

It won't sorry.

It won't sorry.

it will if the weekend starts friday, unfortunately for most it starts Saturday by which time the higher temps in friday afternoon followed by the rain will leave very little unless the models change dramatically in the next 12 hrs

Currently very light snow is still falling, its been off and on all day, generally more persistant in the past couple of hours, still it is only really sticking to cold surfaces, there is a cover of about 1cm, we may catch a bit more over the next few hours, so an inch is achieveable but doubt anything more.

As I expected, today has felt thoroughly raw with temps struggling to get to 1 degree, tonight is looking very icy indeed and tomorrow is looking a very raw dank cold gloomy sort of a day.

Despite snowing from at least 6am, only about a cm or so in south Warrington, settled all over to start with but then largely limited to settling on old snow and ice during the middle of the day before covering all surfaces after dark with a fine dusting. Has been mostly light, and fine but no hint of sleetiness.

I take snow depth reports with a large pinch of salt as very often the claims obviously don't match the evidence, but today it seems we have done quite poorly compared to other regions.

but for a spell of freezing rain this morning which covered the cars in solid ice, today would have been one of the more easily forgot days of this cold spell.

our temperature has hardly moved all day from -1.5c at 6am to -1.1c max in the early afternoon to - 1.5c now.

seems like the uppers have fallen slightly during the day as the rain turned to sleet, then snow and from about 3pm onwards it has stuck to the ground.

depth wise, seems about on a par with everywhere else, certainly from Manchester northwards - a covering and little more.

the journey home from work tonight was the worst of the period due to the icy state of even the main roads.

did see a couple of gritters about but were flashing orange lights and not much else.

obviously saving what grit is available for when the roads are safer. LOL!

all attention now; certainly short term is on the potential for heavy rain over the weekend and the quantity of melt water trapped in the vast amounts of snow currently sat on The Pennines and other high ground.

i can see a rapid thaw of this snow and the inability of frozen ground to soak this up causing problems in low lying areas early next week.

beyond that, possibly the next round of winter 2009/10

Ian

We thought we saw a gritter this morning out of the office window..... but it was a bin lorry - almost as rare but not quite!

Back to almost full snow cover again here. The roads are covered, pavements grass etc. Not that deep but the snow has settled readily since it started around 1pm. Still very light stuff falling now.

Whatever happens for the rest of the winter now, i think this cold period since around Dec 19th has seen the most days with falling and settled snow here for many, many years, the 7" of level snow we had before Christmas is the deepest snow i've seen here for over 25 years (if not in my lifetime).
