ECM means still on board, still worth giving it another 24 hours worth of runs.

Would the Met Office issue a warning for 'the highest ground'? That's just like issuing a warning for Ben Nevis. Although it's not rare for the Highlands to get 40-50cm of snow, I highly doubt this event will deliver and there's not a chance in hell they will issue a red warning for an event 3-4 days away.

Better GFS trickling out - trough further south, isobars in north sea from scandi straightening quicker = better CAA.

Trough needs to start disrupting soon though.

Maybe not. look at these deep pinks on here, 100 miles southward correction and i get absolutely battered.

Is it just me or does there seem to be quite a bit of activity around the north west region?

Yes the showers look to be pepping up in the Irish Sea and over North Wales. Not sure if we'll see any ppn migrate into the Northwest, though.

Current temp 1.9C dp -1.6C

Not sure whether this should go in here or far North of England regional discussion but the most almighty blizzard imaginable on the 18z, look how deep the pinks are, thats either 32 or 64mm an hour for hours in the plural, could equal a metre of level snow, with strong winds that would be drifts that would bury peoples houses, thats a stonker in any month let alone march.

Places like Alston would get buried from that chart above, if it comes off. Impressive for mid-late March.

Snowing here now, looks like I will see a third morning in a row with snow cover.

Mountain snow and lame district blizzard where are your locations. Good to see fellow cumbrians in here.

Derwent Valley near Bassenthwaite Lake, North Cumbria seems to do well from these E / NE'y flows originating from the other side of the pennines, plenty of activity moving in on the radar

Another dry and frosty start today with a current temperature of -2.4c.

Today and Wednesday are both looking like dry days and frosty nights for the region then it's all eyes on the weather system coming in from the Atlantic on Thursday which could, dependent on positioning be anything from yet another damp squib to a full blown dumping in these parts.

I'm not going into ramping mode because no doubt things will change nearer the time but at the moment our region could see a significant fall of snow towards the end of this week.

Although the Synoptics are different to then, I keep thinking of late April 1981; when we had a dumping of about 18 inches IMBY and then an immediate thaw.

No shortage of frosts this March

Indeed, this month has see more frosts than the whole of December, January and February IMBY. What a contrast to the last two March's.

Cold and frosty start to the day here. Overnight low of -2.7C. Blue skies gradually being replaced by cloud moving in from the South.

I wonder if I might finally see some March snow IMBY come the end of this week. Met Office forecast:

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

A cold but fine start on Thursday, then strengthening winds bring the risk of rain and snow later. Persistent snow possible on Friday and Saturday, along with strong winds.

Issued at: 0400 on Tue 19 Mar 2013
