There are differences around the detail over southern Britain tomorrow and so the rainfall amounts. For NE/E Scotland, it is a grim picture into the weekend even with the suggestion of a brighter lull mid Friday, before the rain sets in again Friday night. The easterly wind doesn't give up until Sunday.

The wind is really picking up. Its so noisy. Is that because of the direction?

This is a prudent comment, the ground around hers is so saturted, i drove from Matlock to Sheff on Thursday via Baslow over the Moors is was wet and soggy up there Weds pm so now its just unreal, if the rainfall

charts pan out as suggested theres going to be some worrying news over the next 48 hours for South Yorks and North derbys.

I absolutely agree. We didnt get the correct warnings/concerns leading up to 2007 or 2019 and even now. Its so strange when you consider the citys and towns and living popilation involved. Sheffield speaks for itself. Rotherham Barnsley Doncaster Chesterfield are all fairly large towns. All of these are looking at millions of pounds worth of damage as far as im concerned. The only level of knowledge i lack when making these assertions is any improvement in flood defences made simce 2019? Anyone? If defences are considerably better then maybe the orange warning and moderate flood risk is correct. From a meteorologistic point of view, forecast rain, ground saturation and environment agency estimates on river levels all look on a par if not worse than both years. Maybe tomorrow the met will show more urgency but will it be too late for some properties?

Im only a semi professional forecaster so ill use this as a learning whether right or wrong

If this does come to fruition then it could well be another 2007.

Yup, latest Arome is insane. That’s a huge area of 100mm+ covering some of the most densely populated areas of the UK (Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford etc).

Really hammering it down around the Lincolnshire wolds, been constant for hours. I'd think 40-50mm has fallen in a few spots up there.

I was driving over the Goyt at 1am on the way into Buxton and there was fairly persistent rain at the time with large puddles already formed, eerily the moisture was forming in pockets of intermittent fog which meant the journey there & back was slow going. No doubt places such as Kinder and Bleaklow are going to be a bogfest for anyone foolhardy enough to be venturing across the tops.

Several heavy pulses of rain overnight, and raining heavily now, too. Seems from local stations there is some variance, with the figures so far since midnight heading towards the 1 inch mark at a pace.

Rainfall eased another pulse soon but then it looksd not too bad at the moment but that can change of course.

Hmm. BBC news article saying a “metre of rain” has fallen. But the article detail then quoting amounts of 100mm (ish).

so either the UK 24 rainfall record has been shattered by a factor of 3, or somebody there needs some basic maths lessons! 🤔

Brechiner here - the South Esk could be a major problem. The flooding last November, when the river got to 3.5m, a record by about 40cm, was at least in part caused by some of the flood defence pumps not coming on, but the forecast up until midday Friday shows about 30 hours of heavy rain…. If the river gets to 4m all bets are off, as the main flood wall will be overtopped. Fingers crossed for all living down by the river that it’s not as bad as expected.

That looks like a very real scenario unfortunately

It's meant to consistently reinvigorate from the south through today, unfortunately. Here's the ARPEGE, which has been one of the more consistent outputs in the last few days...

It's probably well past 4m. The station seemed to stop reporting over 2 hours ago when it was at 3.84m

ITV's Good Morning Britain has said the same in their news strap.

So has someone in the Met Office press team, goofed?

River don predicted levels have been brought down to 5m thats still higher than 2007 so meadowhall will flood if it's correct.

Idiots in Brechin now complaining that they have lost everything as the river is in their house and now waiting to be rescued by the fire service in a boat.

After refusing to evacuate yesterday.

Putting emergency services at risk and wasting their time.
