On a  completely unscientific basis, I recall the best winters for longevity through jan and feb tended to have an early December cold spell followed by a relaxation of the cold.  Maybe this one won’t be on that page because it’s still November 😄

Best way to look at this is as follows I think.  We have a bonus early cold spell in a winter that looks primed for blocking episodes the further we go into it.

Also ask your self which classic winter ever really started in the first week of December and lasted all the way through.

The winters of legend certainly didn't.

Take this wintry bonus and wait a little longer  for winter proper to get under way.

Dec 10 the only one I remember and that had mild periods. The month was record breaking because the cold periods were ridiculously cold. Yep, 47 and 63 had pretty normal December's. I'm fact, has there ever bee 3 months of consecutive cold??

Any 10 day cold spell is impressive for out shores

There’s already been a big reduction in temperatures forecast by the BBC for this week over the past 24 hours, for my area. Just look at those temperatures!

I think in-land locations, away from coastal areas, are going to be very cold this week. Particularly at night.

Already seeing this first feature a little more organised than modelled, probably a sign of things to come this week.

In terms of the shorter term snow risks (today/tomorrow) I've drawn this graphic up. Could see 1-3CM across the hillier parts, wouldn't be surprised to see some temporary coverings to lower levels too overnight tonight, UKV for example drops the WBFL to the surface.

A lot of snow has fallen overnight and today here in Czechia, unfortunately temperatures have hovered mainly just above freezing so despite accumulation, there’s also been a lot of melting. Now it’s falling below freezing so snow should start sticking more, but it’s very wet everywhere. Bit of a shame as could’ve been pretty memorable this early in the season

With cold weather here now, and getting well established over the British Isles in the next few days, lets look back in history. November 1983 was a very frosty month with the temperature here in London  max 3 to 5 during the day and -5- or -6 during the night on many occasions, it was a very anticyclonic dominated month. There was a place in the central of England where the temperature fell overnight to -13. We don``t see that temperature in the whole of winter in most years, at that time I remember BBC weatherman Stan Francais stating,  that was the lowest level the temperature can fall at this time of the year without any snow cover. November was much colder 40 years ago.

Location Battersea, London.

No Dec 2010, but also no 2015. Coldest first week of December since 2010 on the cards, what an excellent start to the winter.. even if there's no snow.

find it very underwhelming, many will not see a flake of snow before the Atlantic and milder air arrives on 6th with a snowless whimper

Nothing special about temperatures or weather here for the next 5 or 6 days. Rain, cloud and maybe a couple of frosts - average.

Best start to Winter since Nov/Dec 2010🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Every coming Winter the resident NW Mod thread 'cheerleaders' whip up their 'followers' into a frenzy about computer model output and the chance of some sleet showers🤣

See above - cue the "Darren Bett's a mildy" comments🤣.

Yup, the odd snow shower a bit frosty then what looks like a marginal mess over the weekend thanks to less cold uppers over the UK as pressure begins to build to our south.

A few days ago it did look interesting but now it is like a much hyped game of football that finishes as a boring 0-0
