Edit: @I remember Atlantic 252It's the 12z Arome.

UKV 12z latest also bringing it further north but just misses me. Looks like another uncertain one just 24 hours before.

UKV was hopeless in forecasting yesterday's rain until it played catch up, gfs was the model which was spot on in the first place...😕

Yeah, short-term rain forecasts seem to me to be an area where we really need some improvement. Obviously it's a lot harder than just "make the models better", but certainly for me in the Severn Valley they are noticeably fairly frequently well out. More so than most other types of forecast.

The model thread is moving at lightning speed, but one post that just stuck with me from a pro meteorologist ends with these words...

"Winter is about to start..."

Yes, was that Matt H? I have been following him for a couple of years, really rate him (not that I understand most of what he says, it's too deep for me!). But given the complete dross of December, even a return to something more average would be welcome...anything more a bonus! January should be the heart of winter after all, but it's been a dead loss most of the last few years. Let's hope that we get something colder, drier and sunnier...

Yeah, that's the one. I followed him for a long time on various formats and he always takes time to explain his thought process (like you though a bit deep for me) , always giving a summary of what he thinks could happen and why.
Lets hope for some dry , bright weather to start with and kick on from there.

Looks like today is the beginning of the end of the unsettled pattern we have been stuck with for weeks on end. Don't want to see any more rain for a while now.

The river is up above 5 metres now, generally the sign of a severe flood. No cars allowed over the town bridge, not surprising when this pic shows one of the roads leading to it! Howeve, you can still walk via that path I mentioned in my earlier post. Fortunately it's been dry today and the river should start to recede tomorrow.

Looks like it's just about sparing us tonight. River Soar, Trent, Severn, Avon, Nene etc all those rivers currently very high should stay mostly dry if this stays far enough south.

Would have been an incredible sunset in summer with the high level frontal cloud!

It may be wishful thinking (!?), but it already feels a bit more seasonal out there this morning...? A decent nip in the air (I wouldn't call it a 'chill' just yet personally!) and hints of sun. In and around the University of Birmingham, at least. Something slightly more recognisable as a January day compared to ridiculous mild, boring cloud, or heavy rain...

Uplifts the spirits a little, at least! Now hopefully it gets colder from here, snow or no snow...

They don't tend to pick them up very well. Hopefully we can get the same when (if) the cold air arrives!

anyone else noted the bright shiny orb out today? And no rain?  No comment on snow potential, at least if we see none it will be hopefully dry.
