ok well down near sunny southend we had a small scattering of snow this morning, like a poorly dusted cake. Bright now, feel we are going to miss this one out but that front seems to be moving east quicker than the models suggest so maybe we can catch the edge?

Sunny in Ippy. What a let down. Oh, well never mind. Winter isn't over yet.

Why visit a weather forum and ignore all the info?

There's a radar link here: http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ that makes it pretty obvious why it's sunny in your part of the world.. The fronts not even close to you yet, and never was meant to be for a good few hours yet, which means you're much more likely to get snow because it'll fall at dusk/night when temps are lower.

I'm at 360ft with sleet/rain.

Word of warning using the precip-type radar today

It doesn't actually detect what is falling from the sky, it merely colours the observed precipitation based around recent model data....i'm going to take a guess that the NW Radar is programmed using the NMM?

So, I would expect the precip type radar to start showing sleet as we move through the afternoon, despite the fact it may actually be falling as snow.

Unless i'm wide of the mark and Paul has got it set via current observed conditions?

SK

Probably worth me re-posting that as theres a few posts popping up talking about the 'precip-type' radar

In summary its NOT OBSERVED PRECIPITATION TYPE. Its guess work based upon set parameters, i'm guessing the net-weather one will be set to NMM data - so expect to see sleet on the radar when, judging by the NAE, its more likely to be snow

Lots of lovely big flakes in Central Eastern Milton Keynes (MK14).

Wind has picked up and it's settlling quite nicely.

We seem to have got this frontal snow a lot earlier than I expected.

Been snowing on and off here since about 10.45am ish.

Good luck to all the snow seekers out there!

The bigger the flakes, the more borderline your snow is, having massive flakes is actually a bad thing for cold and snow lovers as this means the upper air temperatures aren't cold enough for drier snow. Big flakes are generally flakes that stick together because they are so wet.

I don't think anyone's really ignoring things...It's just that, when the first front passed through a couple of hours' back, virtually nothing fell. Personally, I find the consequent sudden wind-shift and resulting sunshine a tad ironic...There's no harm in joking about it...good.gif

Snow to the south east (st albans) of us, snow to the north east of us (milton keynes), sleet/rain here, how frustrating.

Why not add your location to your profile, rather than explain what's all around you?

Snow coming down with more intensity now, larger flakes but not settilng yet on paths and roads. Wasn't expecting to see anything until later this afternoon/ overnight! I think this is very much down to nowcasting and have a feeling the entire region should see something today at some point.
