Saturday 31 Dec - Monday 9 Jan

The weekend could bring showers or longer spells of rain for many, with the potential for some heavy burst at times. These showers may be wintry over higher ground in the north. Some drier and brighter spells are also possible, but windy with gales in places. Temperatures near normal, but perhaps locally rather cold in the north whilst remaining mild in the south. Remaining changeable into the beginning of next week, with rain and showers most frequent in the west and northwest. Increased likelihood of longer dry periods as well, most likely towards the east and southeast. Any snowfall will be restricted to Scottish mountains. Mild in the south for the later part of the period, whilst the north sees a mixture of milder and colder spells.

Tuesday 10 Jan - Tuesday 24 Jan

Confidence remains low into mid-January, though most likely scenario is for changeable weather to continue. Mild at first but briefer cold spells from the north and northwest are possible at times, which would bring heavy snow showers to the north. Increased risk of overnight frosts. A trend back towards milder, wetter weather is most likely following this.

Sunday 1 Jan - Tuesday 10 Jan

The start of January may bring showers or longer spells of rain for many, with the potential for some heavier bursts at times, particularly for western facing hills. Snow most likely restricted to higher ground in Scotland. Some drier and brighter spells remain possible, particularly in eastern parts. Generally windy, with temperatures remaining near normal, perhaps slightly below average in the north. Further into the period, changeable conditions are expected to continue. A northwest-southeast split may develop, bringing drier conditions to eastern areas with the most frequent rainfall and strongest winds in the north and west. Temperatures likely to remain near normal, but perhaps locally rather cold in the north whilst remaining mild in the south.

Wednesday 11 Jan - Wednesday 25 Jan

Confidence remains low into mid-January, although the most likely scenario is for changeable weather to continue. Mild at first but briefer cold spells from the north and northwest are possible at times, which could bring snow showers to the north. Increased risk of overnight frosts for much of the period. Towards the end of January, a return to milder, wetter weather is most likely.

Monday 2 Jan - Wednesday 11 Jan

Unsettled weather is likely to stay as we enter the new year, with rain for some, particularly in the far southeast and north initially. There is potential for some heavier bursts at times, particularly for western facing hills. Snow most likely restricted to higher ground in Scotland. Some drier and brighter spells remain possible, especially in eastern parts. Generally windy, with temperatures remaining near normal, perhaps slightly below average in the north. Further into the period, changeable conditions are expected to continue. With spells of strong winds for many, interspersed with colder more showery spells, some snow possible in the north, mainly over higher ground, but possible at lower levels. Temperatures likely staying mild in the south with a mixture of mild and colder spells in the north.

Thursday 12 Jan - Thursday 26 Jan

Confidence remains low into mid-January, although the most likely scenario is for changeable weather to continue. Settled conditions more likely to develop in the south with the wettest and windiest weather in the north and northwest. Brief cold spells from the north are possible at times, which could bring snow showers to the north, but milder conditions are likely to be more prevalent.

Tuesday 3 Jan - Thursday 12 Jan

The start of the period is likely to see a northwest-southeast split with unsettled conditions persisting across the northwest, and a period of more settled conditions for the south and southeast. Some early morning frost or fog patches are possible, with temperatures perhaps rather colder than average. Further into January, there remains some uncertainty regarding the extent of unsettled conditions in the southeast, but further rainfall and strong winds are likely for the northwest, where showers may turn wintry to lower levels at times. The southeast is likely to continue to see the driest conditions with temperatures around average, but some stronger winds remain possible, as well as occasional rain, mainly in the west. Temperatures around average, but more changeable in northern parts, with some milder and colder spells.

Friday 13 Jan - Friday 27 Jan

Confidence remains low into January, although the most likely scenario is for changeable weather to continue. In the south, more settled conditions are possible with northern parts seeing the wettest and windiest weather. Brief colder spells may develop, bringing a risk of frost and snow, however milder conditions are likely to be more prevalent.

Wednesday 4 Jan - Friday 13 Jan

Generally, an unsettled period, with wet and windy weather throughout. After a drier start on Wednesday in the southeast, rain is likely to spread from the northwest. Systems then proceed to move in from the Atlantic, bringing rainfall, heavy at times, and strong winds. This trend continues, with a possible northwest/ southeast split. The west/northwest likely seeing the wettest and windiest conditions, with showers merging into longer spells of rain, possibly wintry in the northwest. The south and southeast will likely see the driest of any weather, but still the occasional spell of rain. Temperatures generally near normal to mild throughout, but with the chance of some colder spells in the north. Disruptive winds are a risk throughout this period, with severe coastal gales possible on western coasts.

Saturday 14 Jan - Saturday 28 Jan

This period will see a continuation of a westerly flow, bringing a northwest/ southeast split across the UK. Northern and northwestern areas will continue to see the wettest and windiest weather, meanwhile the south may see more settled conditions. Occasional colder interludes may bring a risk of fog, frost, and snow, but generally temperatures will be mild for most.

'If' that forecast is near the mark, January will be a write off for cold for the vast majority!

At least you're in one of the better parts of the UK to see colder weather mind, although I suppose you really need to be in the Highlands to benefit from that update?!

They've picked up on the northwesterly theme we've been discussing in the model thread, looks about right tbh. The chance for snow in the north West is mentioned, and warmer down south. Sounds like a high comes along later somewhere, when it's talking about frosts and cold, and snow near the end. Possibly over us then to our north east perhaps.

They made more of the northwesterly theme in yesterday's update though.  Overall, no getting away from the fact that it's a poor update for sustained cold.

These forecasts are changing markedly daily! Disruptive winds and Severe gales suddenly taken out of todays update, thank god!

On the negative side, average to mild throughout for the first part of the update.

On Thursday, drier conditions are likely in northern areas, with some wintry showers across hills in the far north. A weather system from the Atlantic is expected to push into the south of the UK. This bringing cloud and possibly heavy rain across the south. Then a drier interlude for most to end the week with overnight frost. For the rest of the period, Atlantic systems are likely to continue to bring rain, heavy at times and strong winds with a risk of gales across the UK, and locally longer spells of rain in the northwest. The wettest and windiest conditions will most likely be in the north and west, and driest in the east and south. Temperatures overall will be near average or mild.

"Thursday 9 Dec - Thursday 23 Dec

Overall, through this period it is expected to be unsettled and changeable with milder and wetter than average conditions for most, bringing a risk of stormy conditions. Perhaps turning more settled in southern regions for a time in the middle of this period, which will increase the risk of frost and fog when skies clear overnight. Mild for much of this period but some short lived colder spells are possible."

Does that sound like a period that would contain a week seeing a zero CET, lows of minus 10 and a period of snow for even some low lying areas?

The initial period forecasts can be accurate. The ones further afield are for the bin every time.
