Monday 9 Jan - Wednesday 18 Jan

Unsettled and relatively mild weather is most likely to characterise the beginning of this period, with showers or longer spells of rain likely for many areas. Windward coasts and hills, especially in the west, seeing the heaviest and most frequent showers, but also a chance of some heavy rain across southern areas for a time. Any snowfall probably confined to the highest hills in the north. Moving into mid-January a trend towards less unsettled weather is expected, with more drier interludes for most. Such drier spells would see an increase in overnight frosts and morning fog patches as well as scope for lower daytime temperatures. Showers and longer spells of rain are still possible although mainly restricted to the north and northwest.

Thursday 19 Jan - Thursday 2 Feb

Mid-January is likely to bring less unsettled conditions, with more prolonged drier interludes for most areas increasing the incidence of overnight frost and morning fog and perhaps lower daytime temperatures too. Showers or longer spells of rain are possible, however mainly confined to the north and northwest. Towards the end of the period, a return to generally milder and unsettled conditions is the most likely outcome, with spells of wet and windy weather probable across all areas with only brief dry interludes.

Sounds akin to last January - high pressure moving in from the south and probably settle over the UK to give some frost and fog and temps around average but no snow.

Yes, that was my fear after the cold spell in December finished, that the rest of winter could be similar to last year!  Just hope February doesn't follow suit!

A slightly colder high pressure as happened last January I would be happy with preferably with a snowy transition - could then live with a Feb like last year with gritted teeth i guess, but last Feb was very wet and stormy and something more toned down would be better. I don't expect such a wet and stormy Feb. Whilst the atlantic is strong it doesn't have the stormyness stride of many a year, indeed the lack of named storms this season is quite unusual by this stage.

Tuesday 10 Jan - Thursday 19 Jan

Unsettled and relatively mild weather is most likely to characterise the beginning of this period, with showers or longer spells of rain likely for many areas, interspersed with clearer and brighter spells. Windward coasts and hills, especially in the west, seeing the heaviest and most frequent showers, potentially windy across all areas at times. Any snowfall probably confined to the highest hills in the north. Moving into mid-January a trend towards less unsettled weather is expected, with more drier interludes for most. Such drier spells would see an increase in overnight frosts and morning fog patches as well as scope for lower daytime temperatures. Showers and longer spells of rain are still possible although mainly restricted to parts of the west.

Friday 20 Jan - Friday 3 Feb

Mid to late January is likely to bring less unsettled conditions, with more prolonged drier interludes for most areas increasing the incidence of overnight frost and morning fog and perhaps lower daytime temperatures too. Showers or longer spells of rain are possible, however mainly confined to the west or northwest. Towards the end of the period, a return to generally milder and unsettled conditions is the most likely outcome, with spells of wet and windy weather probable across all areas with only brief dry interludes.

Wednesday 11 Jan - Friday 20 Jan

On Wednesday, a mixture of sunshine and blustery showers, with hail and a risk of a thunderstorm, is likely for most places. Showers may merge into longer spells of rain at times. Strong winds with gales are likely across western coasts, with a low risk of severe gales in northwestern areas. For the rest of the period, unsettled weather conditions are expected to continue for many, with sunny spells and blustery showers expected in the west and northwest, and a chance of rain in southern areas. Wintry showers are likely in the highlands of Scotland. Temperatures generally near normal throughout the period, but colder at times in the north, and with milder spells in the south.

Thursday 12 Jan - Saturday 21 Jan

On Thursday, southern parts are likely to see a wet start, with rain spreading northeastwards through the day to affect many areas. The heaviest and most persistent rain is expected to be found over higher ground in the west, with the driest conditions in the far northeast. Lighter winds than of late across Scotland, but some stronger winds possible across the south. Generally mild. Later in the period, conditions are likely to be unsettled, with showers or longer spells of organised rain possible across all areas. Wettest in western parts, with wintry showers mostly confined to northern higher ground. Often windy. Temperatures perhaps colder than of late to start, but returning to average towards the end of the period.

Updated: 14:00 (UTC) on Sat 7 Jan 2023

Sunday 22 Jan - Sunday 5 Feb

The end of January may see a return to more settled conditions, particularly across the south, with the strongest winds and heaviest rain likely confined to northern areas for a time. Confidence is markedly low for the end of the period. A return to mostly unsettled conditions is most likely, with strong winds and rain possible for all areas. Temperatures generally mild, although some colder interludes likely, bringing wintry conditions at times.
