It’s not exactly difficult to achieve a cooler second half January compared to the first half!

Who's expecting this sentence to still be there this afternoon? 🙂

Well, it isn't, but neither is the update a total disaster!

Monday 16 Jan - Wednesday 25 Jan

Much of this period is likely to be rather unsettled. On Monday, with cold air in place, showers are likely to be wintry across the north, even to low levels, with some wintriness in showers further south too, but equally there will be some sunny spells. For the following few days, the most likely scenario is one of generally colder conditions, compared to recently, to dominate, with potential for brief incursions of milder air tied with Atlantic frontal systems. This means further wet weather is likely, especially in the west, with perhaps a greater incidence of snow compared to what we've seen so far in January. Strong winds or gales are also possible at times.

Thursday 26 Jan - Thursday 9 Feb

The end of January may see more settled conditions, particularly across the south, with spells of strong winds and rain confined to northern areas for a time. Into the start of February, confidence is markedly low. A return to unsettled conditions is most likely, with further spells of strong winds and rain for all areas. Temperatures generally mild, although some colder interludes likely, bringing wintry conditions at times.

Just some wintriness in showers for the South!

Where's the ironic "Merry Christmas" reaction when you need it!

It didn't mention wintriness in the south in yesterday's update though!

Tuesday 17 Jan - Thursday 26 Jan

Tuesday will see a continuation of sunny spells and wintry showers in many central and northern areas, with an area of rain, sleet and snow perhaps affecting some southern Britain for a time. Windy in the southwest with a chance of gales here. Further into the week colder conditions than of late are expected to continue, with overnight frost and some further wintry showers and ice. However, with time, there are signs that it will turn milder again as weather systems run in from the west, bringing further rain, especially to the west and northwest, and perhaps preceded by snow initially, along with the potential for strong winds or gales at times. By the end of the period, pressure may build towards the southeast.

Been a long time since we had a few cms, there was a 3-4 inch very wet snowfall one morning in Feb 2020 only snow of that season, but it thawed very quickly. Winter 20-21 brought a number of 1-2 cm falls, again I think we had a wet 2 inch fall early Feb didn't stick around. Nov 28 2021 brought about 3cms and that was it for last winter.

Winter 18-19 again I think couple cms at best here.

Have to go back to Feb 28 2018 last time we had 3 inches +, stuck around for a couple of days but then thawed the following weekend.

Our last big snowfall nearly 10 years ago now, 8 inches 26 Jan 2013 that thawed in the afternoon. We just missed out on the blizzard of 23 Mar 2013, we have been very unlucky.

Wednesday 18 Jan - Friday 27 Jan

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will likely bring bright or sunny spells for much of the UK, with some coastal wintry showers mainly affecting the north and east, although some may push further inland at times. Cold temperatures over this period will be exacerbated by strong winds with a widespread frost likely, most severe in the far north. A return to more generally unsettled weather is likely through next weekend and into the following week, with low pressure to the northwest of the UK bringing strong winds and heavy rain to many northern and western areas. The southeast or sheltered areas in the east will likely be drier and more settled. Temperatures expected to return to average for many, perhaps slightly above average at times.

Saturday 28 Jan - Saturday 11 Feb

As we move into February a continuation of unsettled weather is most likely, with the wettest and windiest conditions in the north and west, whilst the southeast and east likely experiencing spells of more settled conditions. Temperatures remaining around average or slightly above, however the risk of brief colder spells within this remains.
