I said the same a while ago.  Looking forward to doing morning dog walkies in the local woods in DRY, frosty and cold conditions.  So much better than drizzle, wind & rain all the time.

Indeed. I saw a few people saying that "this sort of cold without snow is useless" and that they'd rather have milder and wetter weather instead!

Each to their own of course, but I cannot understand that mindset. From a usability perspective alone, these conditions are a significant improvement over what we had for basically the entirety of December and first week or so of Jan. Aesthetically, its more pleasant too, with sunsets and sunrises on display and the low-level lighting painting a pretty picture over the landscapes.

And for people who do like cold, it is cold. In my area, -1c this morning, and looking to be -2c tonight, which is a solid 6/7c below average lows/minimums. No doubt elsewhere in the country will be markedly colder too, throughout this week.

The lack of widespread snow is the only real letdown in my book. Which, as much I would've enjoyed from an interest/excitement perspective, would've created utter havoc on my commute re transport, as it always does, even if its just a few cm.

As the poster above said - I guarantee you we will see perfect conditions for snow/cold weather in March/April.

We had such conditions for most of high summer 2023 😎

Well halfway through winter then and time for a short summary:

-Snow days (2cm snow or more on the ground): 42/46 days (91%) , average 51%

- Coldest temp: -23,2c , average 1991-2020 -20,8c

- Days above 5c : 4 days, average 1991-2020 20 days

-Average temperature: -5,3, average 1991-2020 -1,2

So far a classic moderate cold winter but still nothing like 2009-2010 where the temperature stayed below 0c for 61 days in a row, it feels more like a colder version of the 2012/2013 winter with more punch in the cold spells.

Don't be ridiculous.

Global warming is a fact. There are no "opinions" here

Absolutely. Opinions differ on how much of it, if any, is man-induced, but the fact of it is incontrovertible.

Looks like it might be dry and mild, not wet and mild: that should please both camps. Well, except those who want snow. 😉

Hopefully, but UKMO has vile stuff, I'd be happy with dry and mild, but love snow too

In Great Yarmouth we have a blizzard! Heavy flakes and good covering

Looks like the proverbial "wishbone" effect is working really well, with the other side of the country in West Wales getting prepared for the "Pembrokeshire Dangler " starting to get organised! 😨

Actually feel lucky being in South Devon for once. Seems it might just give us a dusting... maybe.🤞

It was Feb 86….but in Swansea we had a huge dumping before it got incredibly cold and the snow, with top ups mid month, remained all month like it would in Alpine villages …..amazing month

my favourite winter month of all time.

Wouldn't need that much of a correction northwards to give us some fun and games.

That would truly be a blessing. Hopefully we get some early spring warmth in February too.

For the first time since mid November I haven't even bothered checking the model output and the main model thread has slowed to a trickle.

This time last week, a long term cold spell looked likely and now we're back to mild and wet again.

Where did you get the info that a long term cold spell was likely?? I never picked up on that. Has been showing old for this week for a while now, showing back to mild till end of Jan and then strong signals for more cold into Feb. There were some longer term models suggesting long cold but there was no overall agreement in the models

Been a nice day here, plenty of sunshine, around 3/4 degrees.  Felt cold, but nothing a coat, gloves, and scarf could'nt sort out.

Got to be better than 11 degrees with wind , and rain.  That's about as much use as a plastacine  walking stick.

ECM 46, teleconnections,  strat warming,  drop in zonal wind speeds, MJO etc.

The longest chase in Netweather history ends in typical fashion.  It''s very likely that the January CET comes in above average.  We hope that February delivers, but the EC46 is moving away from sustained wintry weather.

I think Ill take that after  its all gone tits up from early January predictions. If it shows milder surely it will backfire and go wintry

Classic. Absolutely classic.

This also often happens in summer too with the sunny and warm conditions just "slipping into Europe" and Britain magically getting none of it.
