B87 As wet as Autumn was, it looks like we did good for sunshine. I wonder if we will get a spring-like Autumn to make up for this Autumnal spring

April is likely to be the wettest and dullest since 2012, but didnt really feel all that awful for some reason. Better than 2000, 2001, 2012 and 2018, but perhaps slightly worse than last April

WYorksWeather The thing is with "redeeming" the year, there's no "making up for lost time" so to speak. It'll be well into May before anything shifts properly, and there's no guarantee it even will, tbh.

Regardless of what pans out over summer and autumn this year, it won't change the fact that the first third of the entire year was woefully dull, wet and uninspiring.

It's a bit like summer 2023, which was near-universally perceived as a very poor summer season despite the very sunny and dry June, because the proceeding 6-7 weeks were absolutely rotten.

So, for me, it's less a case of "writing the year off", but moreso recognising the reality that even a 'perfect' rest of the year will not erase how poor this winter and spring have been, and as such, the year will only ever be able to come out as, say, a 6/10 overall at best.

baddie As long as it also gets typical spring rainfall amounts. While autumn 2023 was slightly sunnier than average, it was also extremely wet.

Ideally a 200 hour September with very little rain, a 170 hour October with less than 30mm and a 100+ hour November with less than 40mm would help.

We are overdue a long long run of dry months.

B87 I think May will probably be dry after the first week, then June perhaps warm, sunny and settled first 10 days, then changeable and followed by a warm and dry July. August then maybe unsettled in the middle, but hot, sunny and dry at the start and end (A bit like 2019 or a warmer version of 2007). September perhaps the same vein as August, then October being the sunniest and driest on record (170 hours, pretty much wiping out almost all Marches and most Septembers)

baddie What you hope will happen or what you think will happen? That May to October period sounds like 1959 or 2003, and would be extremely unlikely I feel.

I think May 2024 will be like a wetter and duller version of last May. Wouldn't be surprised if June to September was like 2016, but worse. An atrocious June, a so/so July, August to be the best month but not great, then a warm but very dull September. October will probably be like most Octobers these days. Mild, extremely wet and with less than 100 hours of sun.

By the end of the year, we will have seen less sun than 2021 (currently the dullest year on record).

baddie even the worst summers of recent times have had hot days and warmer spells. Unless there's a catastrophic volcanic eruption, I'm not sure how we could possibly see a cool summer. And even at that, those volcanic summers that have happened in the past have recorded upper 20s at the least.

8 weekends to go and the days get shorter again, meanwhile, relentless cloud and cool carp once again today, just once this year has it felt warm and even then it was windy.  Heating on again, even wearing a hat earlier. Yawn. Yes April can be cold as can any month but enough is enough, this is relentless sheet.  Don't worry though in 12 weeks it will flip to 42c in the shade for 3 days before back to semi-perma autumn grey lids begin again.

James1979 Yes. Pretty sure it was 14.5c on Xmas day in my area in 2023.

Struggling to get above 10c for the last few days here lol, and with the wind chill, it's been a "feels like less than 10c" situation.

Just madness. Ahh, Britain - one of the only places where all that separates a day in summer from a day in winter is the daylight hours.

Indeed, the max/high on the summer solstice in June 2021 was actually cooler in parts of the country than the winter solstice of the December 6 months prior. A feat that very few climates that have "seasons" can make claim to.

B87 I’m actually surprised we had 7 months out of 12 with above average sunshine in London last year.

baddie I think Augusts of 1993 and 2007 were great if you like dry weather but can't stomach the heat.   Cool and sunny months arent exactly a bad thing and at least you feel you dont get shortness of breath when you sleep.

danm Yet we still ended up below average for the year. A single extra sunny day between Nov-Feb can result in a month with 120% of the average.

Addicks Fan 1981 Both cool by day and chilly by night, not ideal for being outside if there is any breeze or cloud at all. I recall August 2007 feeling more like September than August.

richie3846  probably in the 96% range like us in Exeter…not sure why met office do the white shading for 95% - 105% sunshine amounts? I’m all for being optimistic but it’s either below average, average or above, it’s misleading

TwisterGirl81 5% either side of average is “about” average I suppose.

richie3846 It was a few hours below the average. It's only really because of June that it got anywhere near the average.

richie3846 The problem is most of the Sun and dry was clustered right into the months where people don't really want it, and the wettest and dullest conditions were right when people want Sun and dry the most. That and aside from most of November and January, it's been non-stop at this point since mid-October.

Overall April will finish very dull but much less significantly wet than previous months. As we saw both March and February were horifically wet. April will be barely above average for the south which isn't what people want to see but you can bet agriculture is thanking the Lord that the same level of rainfall hasn't been seen for another month as one more 100+mm month would've put this year's harvest in serious jeopardy. The north has seen very high rainfall this month but agriculture up there is used to much higher rainfall levels than down south anyway, and the past x months haven't seen such an insanely high rainfall anomaly as December, February and March did here. The kind of anomalies we're talking about would've seen these northern areas getting 250+mm for consecutive months in a row.
