Why?

I would imagine wages.
I have to say the Met Office are poor payers, certainly in the IT Department. I spent some time look at jobs and the salaries and just not attractive compared to other similar jobs elsewhere.

Just don't let this be the well known Met Office curse (or for the sake of heating let's hope it is, I don't mind which end of the spectrum you are from).

Just look at that wording,

90% chance of severe cold weather and icy conditions between the 7th and the 12th.

This is what each region is forecast.

It's not a Met Office warning per se, it's an alert system in conjunction with Public Health England. It won't show up on their standard warnings page.

This alert was only issued because of the current situation with high energy costs. A lot of people are trying to reduce costs by setting very low temps inside their houses. So PHE+METO are playing it safe. There is no way they would issue a level 3 alert for this kind of cold 2 years ago.

There was one issued in December 2020.

And January 2019.

Really? I must have missed it then. Was it level 3 for severe cold? Because highs at 1C can't be considered as severe cold. We had here before several days of all day freezing temperatures without any warnings.

Why?

Because forecasters are hugely underpaid, doing shift work for a  difficult stressful job who everyone likes to blame when they get weather they don't prepare for?

It's the reason why I left the industry.

Saturday 10 Dec - Monday 19 Dec

Cold weather is expected to continue through at least the first part of this period, with widespread and locally severe overnight frosts. Many coastal regions will see periods of wintry showers, with snow most likely on high ground but perhaps also to lower levels at times in these areas. Inland areas, by contrast, should see more in the way of fine and dry weather with the potential for some crisp, sunny days, although more limited spells of rain, sleet or snow cannot be ruled out. As time goes on, there is an increasing chance of milder air spreading from the southwest bringing longer periods of rain, with the potential for more widespread snow for a time on its leading edge, but low confidence as to when this might occur.

Tuesday 20 Dec - Tuesday 3 Jan

The second half of December remains uncertain, but there are hints of a return to nearer normal temperatures. This would be associated with spells of more unsettled weather, especially for the south, and a reducing risk of wintry hazards overall, although periods of severe weather are still possible. Northern areas are likely to hold onto the colder conditions for longest.

Sunday 11 Dec - Tuesday 20 Dec

Cold weather is expected to continue through at least Sunday and into the beginning of next week, particularly in the north. Wintry showers will mainly affect coastal regions, with snow most likely over higher ground but perhaps falling to lower levels at times. By contrast, inland areas should see more in the way of fine and dry weather, with widespread frosts locally severe at times. While timing is uncertain for now, areas of cloud, rain and stronger winds are increasingly likely to progress into southwestern areas at times, with potential for significant snowfall along the leading edge of such systems. Temperatures remaining cold to very cold, with a chance of returning closer to normal across the south later into the period.

I know this isn't a model output but this is a very informative video by the met, posting it here as I'm sure some of the less experienced people can benefit from this.

The cold weather alert in England only goes out until Monday. Does that mean they’ll extend it if the colder charts like ECM and UKNO verify ?
