Monday 12 Dec - Wednesday 21 Dec

Cold weather is expected to continue through the period, particularly in the north, although some milder spells are possible in southern regions. Wintry showers will mainly affect the north and northeast UK, with western and central areas remaining dry. A widespread, locally severe, frost is expected with the potential for freezing fog in places. While timing remains uncertain, areas of cloud, rain and stronger winds may progress into southwestern areas with potential for significant snowfall and freezing rain. Later in the period, cold weather with wintry showers is likely to continue in the north, with rain and strong wind likely in the south. Temperatures remaining cold to very cold, with occasional milder spells in the south.

Rain and strong winds likely in the South later next week and into the Xmas week according to the Met Office.

Does that mean the milder option hinted by GFS members is favoured ?

To me it sounds like the mild won’t win out and will be pushed away. Staying cold throughout the further north you go. I think it’s a decent update but I’m in Yorkshire so we will stay cold. Might be frustrating for those in the south although there could well be a significant snow event

Thursday 22 Dec - Thursday 5 Jan

General themes remain uncertain for the rest of the period. Conditions may be widely changeable, with some spells of rain, and at times snow. These expected to be accompanied by strong winds, initially focused in southern parts, but affecting all areas at times. Colder and more settled conditions with occasional wintry showers could continue, particularly in the north. Temperatures gradually returning closer to average towards the end of December and start of January.

Tuesday 13 Dec - Thursday 22 Dec

On Tuesday, snow showers are expected to continue across the northeast of the UK. An increase in cloud cover is likely in the southwest. Dry weather conditions will likely dominate for the rest of the UK. Moderate to strong southeasterly winds likely in the south and west, feeling bitterly cold in places. After Tuesday, cold conditions are likely to stay for the majority, with wintry showers mainly along the coasts. Often dry and cold inland with widespread hard frosts and patchy freezing fog predicted. There is potential for areas of cloud, rain and strong winds to spread across the south, bringing a mixture of rain and snow for a time. Temperatures are likely to be below normal through the period but may increase nearer to normal in the south later.

Not quite the update I’m looking for.

Why?  Potential for snow in your area and the details in these forecasts are changing daily.

Interesting graphics on latest bbc forecast - best case scenario really with a spell of snow in the south later next week then a return to cold!! 🧐
Thurs through to Sat below

Could contain: Person, Outdoors, Nature, Plot, Chart

Basically just this mornings 00z ECM run, the BBC really are so poor. They just copy and paste whatever the previous ECM run shows no matter what.

Not to say it's wrong of course!

Hopefully this confirms once and for all that in a cold spell, a seemingly dry outlook can change at short notice as features pop up.
Shame I’m about 3 miles west of the warning area! Hopefully it moves west.

Their confidence is very low in fact , it’s just if it happens it will be disruptive
