Monday 13 Mar - Wednesday 22 Mar

On Monday, residual rain, sleet and snow is expected to clear for most areas except the far north of Scotland. Widespread heavy rain is expected to move across much of the country from the southwest, with snow possible in high ground areas of Northern Ireland and northern England. Temperatures will be milder in the south, but colder in the north. For the rest of the period, low pressure and unsettled conditions will likely bring wetter conditions for most, particularly in the west. Milder conditions are likely for many, whilst colder conditions are likely in the far north, with further snow and ice at times. Strong winds and coastal gales mainly in western exposures. Temperatures overall will be around average, but a chance of colder conditions in the north at first.

Thursday 23 Mar - Thursday 6 Apr

Confidence remains fairly low during this period, with a lot of uncertainty. However, in general it's likely to be drier further north, apart from occasional wintry showers, while rain and strong winds are more likely to be more of a feature in the south, with a low risk of snow at times, mainly on the boundary between these two regimes. Milder conditions may extend north periodically. Temperatures overall mainly around average, with milder spells in the south and colder spells in the north.

Tuesday 14 Mar - Thursday 23 Mar

Strong winds will likely turn northerly on Tuesday, drawing colder air southwards across much of the UK. This is expected to bring wintry showers, especially impacting many exposed coasts. However, away from Scotland, settling snow most likely confined to high ground. Temperatures nearer average in the south. The unsettled regime is predicted to stay into mid-week, although becoming milder than average for most away from the far north, this bringing rainfall, and potentially strong winds at times. This theme is likely to continue, with spells of rain periodically moving north, and snow on the leading edge of rainfall over northern high ground. Many places potentially wetter than average through this period, except for the far north, with temperatures around average for many.

Friday 24 Mar - Friday 7 Apr

Wednesday 15 Mar - Friday 24 Mar

After a frosty start, Wednesday is likely to be a dry, bright day for many although with snow showers persisting along northern and eastern coasts. Thicker cloud with outbreaks of rain will spread from the southwest later on, perhaps wintry on the leading edge as it moves northeastwards. Staying generally unsettled into the weekend, bringing strong winds for most, and spells of occasionally heavy rain. Further snow is also possible, mainly over high ground in the north. This theme is likely to continue through into the latter part of March, with the potential for many areas to be wetter than average during this time. Temperatures will trend towards average for most, although with a chance of a lingering cold spell in the north.

Saturday 25 Mar - Saturday 8 Apr

Confidence remains fairly low during this period. However, there are signs of more settled, drier conditions becoming established over the UK. Temperatures expected to be cooler than average with the greatest chance of significant rainfall and milder conditions being in the south. Towards the end of this period, temperatures trending closer to average.

Thursday 16 Mar - Saturday 25 Mar

Thursday is expected to be generally unsettled with a north/south split developing. Wet and possibly windy conditions are more likely in the south and southwest, perhaps improving through the day, while snow is possible to the north, particularly over higher ground of Scotland. Staying changeable into the weekend with a mixture of periods of wind and rain, and more settled, possibly colder spells, with further snow possible mainly over high ground in the north. This theme is likely to continue through into late March, with the potential for many areas to be wetter than average. However, there are indications of drier conditions towards the end of the month. Temperatures will trend towards average for most, although with a chance of a lingering cold spell in the north.

Sunday 26 Mar - Sunday 9 Apr

Confidence remains fairly low during this period. However, there are signs of more settled, drier conditions becoming established over the UK. Temperatures expected to be cooler than average with the greatest chance of significant rainfall and milder conditions in the south. Any wintry hazards are likely to be short-lived given the time of year. Temperatures are expected to trend closer to average as we move towards mid-April.

Friday 17 Mar - Sunday 26 Mar

Cloudy for most on Friday with the best of any brighter spells most likely in central parts of the UK. Rain likely in Scotland, where it could turn to snow over higher ground, also over England and Wales, which could be heavy with a risk of thunder. Staying changeable into the weekend with a mixture of clear and sunny spells and rain, with a chance of further snow in parts of Scotland. Temperatures rather mild, especially in the south, but likely cold in the far north. Strong winds at times, especially around coasts. This theme is likely to continue into late March, with the potential for many areas to be wetter than average. Towards the end of the month, cooler and drier conditions are most likely, especially in the north.

Monday 27 Mar - Monday 10 Apr

Temperatures expected to be cooler than average with the greatest chance of significant rainfall and milder conditions in the south. Saturday 18 Mar - Monday 27 Mar

Saturday is likely to be rather cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain possible for many, although generally rather mild, while parts of the north could see continuing sleet or snow accompanied by some strong winds. More widespread showery rain remains possible on Sunday with some wintry showers and colder conditions spreading southwards, followed by a drier period with some frost and ice on Monday morning. Towards the end of March, pressure may become higher across northern areas and will likely be accompanied by colder conditions, whilst southern areas could see further wet weather at times. The northern edge of any rain will still be prone to fall as snow, but given the time of year, wintry hazards will likely become increasingly transient.

Sunday 19 Mar - Tuesday 28 Mar

Sunday will be a changeable day, mostly likely starting dry and bright for central and southern parts, while in the north cloudy conditions, with rain and showers eventually clearing east with drier conditions at least for a time. More wet and windy weather arrives into the west, becoming widespread into the start of next week. Thereafter, confidence is generally reduced but most likely remaining unsettled, with periods of rain and strong winds expected for many areas at times. There is likely to be a continued risk of snow in northern parts of the country, particularly across higher ground of Scotland, and perhaps some wintry showers for the far north. Temperatures overall will be near average to mild in the south, but near average to cold in the north.

Wednesday 29 Mar - Wednesday 12 Apr

From the start of this period, likely to see a change, quite quickly, towards less unsettled weather with often dry conditions becoming more likely across the northern half of the country, and any wetter conditions tending to become more confined to the south. Temperatures are likely to slowly trend below average as a result of somewhat more settled conditions but given the time of year, wintry hazards will probably become increasingly transient through the period.

Reminds me of April 2021, given the late SSW I wouldn't be surprised of a chilly April.

That's quite an interesting statement to see in one of these updates. @Eagle Eye is this in line with your prognosis posted yesterday?

@Mike Poole @nick sussex do you think they're seeing the response to the second reversal in the stratosphere that 'peaked' at the beginning of March?

I have never really differentiated the ‘second reversal’ - as far as I’m concerned it is all one evolution from the trop precursors through the technical SSW and its evolution after.  The fact that it reversed at 10hPa and 60N twice is not relevant.  A strong SSW like this can affect patterns in the trop for some weeks after as the effects propagate down, and they tend to propagate down in lumps and bumps anyway.  So entirely likely that the pattern into April will still be influenced by the SSW.  I expect coldish outbreaks until about mid April, and then a sudden warm up, for what it’s worth.

Monday 20 Mar - Wednesday 29 Mar

On Monday, a mixture of heavy showers and rain, with some bright conditions, is expected in the west, with strong winds and coastal gales at times. Spells of rain are likely in northeast England and east Scotland, with snow possible over high ground. For the rest of the period confidence is low, however low pressure is expected to bring unsettled conditions of rainy periods, with strong winds for most. A risk of snow continued in northern parts of the country, particularly over the higher ground of Scotland, with showers possible in the far north at times. Possibly wet conditions are expected in the west, especially on west and southwest facing hills. Temperatures overall will be near average to mild in the south, but near average to cold in the north.

Thursday 30 Mar - Thursday 13 Apr

From the start of this period, likely to see a change, quite quickly, towards less unsettled weather with often dry conditions becoming more likely across the northern half of the country, and any wetter conditions tending to become more confined to the south. Temperatures are likely to slowly trend below average as a result of somewhat more settled conditions but given the time of year, wintry hazards will probably become increasingly transient through the period.

Tuesday 21 Mar - Thursday 30 Mar

Initial cloud and rain clearing northeastwards on Tuesday, likely followed by sunny spells interspersed with showers, these perhaps heavy at times especially in the north. Further cloud and rain may then spread from the west later. Locally strong winds possible, with a low risk of coastal gales. The rest of the period will likely be characterised by continued unsettled weather, with cyclonic conditions expected to dominate initially, bringing rain and showers, these heavy at times. The west seeing the most precipitation and the east staying comparatively drier. Windy at times, with a continued risk of coastal gales. Wintry showers may return at times in the north later, however precipitation totals generally less here than in the south. Temperatures generally normal to mild, however brief widely cold spells are probable.

Friday 31 Mar - Friday 14 Apr

From the start of this period, likely to see a change, quite quickly, towards less unsettled weather with often dry conditions becoming more likely across the northern half of the country, and any wetter conditions tending to become more confined to the south. Wednesday 22 Mar - Friday 31 Mar

On Wednesday, a band of rain will move eastwards, occasionally heavy, particularly across hills in western areas. Later in the day, Northern Ireland and other western areas should see brighter spells, with a few showers developing. Windy conditions likely. Low pressure is expected to dominate for the rest of the week, bringing showers or longer spells of rain, heavy at times. Highest precipitation totals likely in the west, with comparatively drier conditions in the east. Throughout the rest of the period unsettled conditions are most likely to continue, with periods of strong wind and rain, interspersed with shorter, drier spells. Temperatures likely close to average in the south but with a chance of becoming rather cold in the north.

Saturday 1 Apr - Saturday 15 Apr

To start the period, a continuation of unsettled conditions is the most likely. Moving further into April, a chance of more settled weather is most likely, with drier conditions more probable. There is a chance that temperatures may trend cooler than average through this period.

It's weird when an eye-catching, confident statement like this one appears in these updates, stays there for a few days, and then disappears, with us left none the wiser as to why it was ever there...
