Wont be seeing that storm in the channel but hoping for some Lincolnshire goodness with those cells North of it, looks rather hit and miss unless its mostly elevated

Easterly winds ahead of the shortwave trough, and westerly on the backside.

So it's one big convergence zone moving north east. Shame I was hoping it wouldn't stay linear, and start to build outwards, so it would storm for longer.

Just hit rain now in Fareham as we head to the Solent - lightning flashes all over the place, rain getting heavy.

Wow! We are in Kingsbridge, South Devon.

Have a clear view east as we are fairly high up and I can see the flashes of those storms from here! Cloud tops must be very, very high.

That's got to be at least 100-120 miles away

A basic video but you'll eventually see in the centre right a flash of lightning! Woo!

Looks to me that the channel island storm will run ne and possibly pass across London at its westerly point

the line of storms (less intense) that have developed west of this channel MCS will mean that most of central and e england should receive something as they trundle ne …

Cloud tops of 40,000 are pretty standard for summer storms are they not? Remember a few years back a storm had really high tops can't remember how high

Well they are reaching the tropopause, probably with overshooting tops which is as high as they can get. Obviously the tropopause is lower in the winter and higher near the equator. Commercial airliners fly at around 40k ft, so not something you really want to encounter, coffin corner and all.... hence the reason they are avoided

nice

if you can arrange for it to do a bit of minor damage to signalling round the station area - just enough to get my out of a 5:30 start - that’d be great

Gatwick airport is still sending out flights so my guess is they're trying to get as many as they can out ASAP before the storm hits
