I’ve been there a couple of times too. Hard to imagine there’ll be much left

Just watching the last webcam I can find operating on those islands (Sanibel) and it looks terrifying.

Never seen so much lightning in an eyewall before. It's dying down a bit now according to Blitzortung (only the eastern eyewall is active at the moment).

I think (according to my search) the last webcam on Sanibel Island has just gone. I was seeing the incroaching sea water, at a big road junction (big for Sanibel), rising at around an inch every couple of mins. If you haven't been, Captiva and Sanibel are very low-lying gulf coast islands. Stoms like this can change geography. I'm not sure places like these will still be habitable once this passes. Very sad.

More than a little irony that this Ian has been fortunate enough to have toured around many of the places that big violent Ian is trying his best to wreck.

Thoughts are with those in the firing line and I feel lucky that although most of our trips to the Caribbean and Florida have been during the hurricane season, we have never been in the direct firing line of one.

This is a potentially dreadful event for Gulf coast areas. I spent a wonderful holiday on Captiva Island a few years ago and some of the scenarios seem to suggest it will be completely overwhelmed by the surge.

Thought I heard this morning high tide was at 6pm in a number of areas. Is this all happening at low tide? If it is, imagine if the major winds are still around when the high tide comes in.

Difference between high and low tides there is very small (around 3ft if I remember right) and the surge was forecast to be 12 - 18ft. so doesn't seem to make a difference where the tide is at. Highest point on Captiva is 16ft ASL.

I had seen this on some model runs with it getting back to tropical storm or even hurricane status once it gets into the Atlantic

When do we get the next update on Ians strength

5pm Florida time, so 10pm in the UK. There could be special advisories and updates before then though.

Looks like NHC sticking at 135 kts for now so still high cat 4.

No chance of people ambling in the background whilst presenters make it look more dramatic than it is - all the coverage looks like a really serious hurricane that will lead to bad news tomorrow in the clear up. Reed Timmer ... I fear for him.
