It has stayed dry here today 😲. Plenty of cloud but with the odd brighter break and a hazy brighter orb observable through the thinner layers. We might even have sun and decent early May temperatures tomorrow!

I remember Atlantic 252 Tiree is the sunniest place in May in the NW. I think Tiree is still worse than London or Shanklin in May though.

Tiree: av max 13.1c, rainfall 66.4mm on 12.8 days, sun 240 hours

London: av max 18.4c, rainfall 45.9mm on 8.0 days, sun 208 hours

Shanklin: av max 15.9c, rainfall 52.2mm on 7.9 days, sun 248 hours

No I think it has to stop completely, at least for a few weeks! 😆

I remember Atlantic 252 We used to do pretty well in April & May but recently, not so much. I do find it bizarre that places in Scotland etc are consistently sunnier than South East places in these months lately. Wonder what the reason for this is?

Never had my heating on in May before ... It's on right now

Knowing the way things are, you won't need the heating on come December! 🙄

December 2013 was very mild but 2015 was a different ball game altogether and bordering on a warm month, as opposed to exceptionally mild!

Northern blocking, southerly tracking jet stream, and as a result, high pressure to the north of the UK, low pressure systems milling about at mid latitudes. A common set up at this time of year, but likely made worse by the SSW

Although saying that, in April the wettest weather was actually across Cumbria, central and southern Scotland.

stainesbloke yes we need a lengthy break from it. But can't seem to get it at the moment. One good thing though is it's not as muddy now as it was a month ago. Probably to do with the fact that the ground is getting warmer, the days are lengthening and when the sun does appear it's pretty strong now.

MP-R Fair enough, it’s been relentlessly wet for so long, a few weeks without rain shouldn’t be an issue at all.

Dark Horse Hopefully a pattern change very soon. The trees and flora in general will be using up more moisture now

It's always next week....

This one is now only 3-4 days away - the improvement starts to kick in around Tuesday.

Of course, it'll take more than one nice week to begin to compensate for the recent dross...

SunSean  Bizarre! It’s been going on since 2021 really when you guys had a terrible “summer”, the north had a great one and we had a benign one. It broke in 2022 and then last spring the south and east were cold and grey and now again this year.

TheOgre Oh yeah, how could I forget 2021! You could say that the North are sunnier on average now comparing to the south east 😂 What a time to be alive in this corner!

Hoping this "high pressure" we're meant to be getting next week is gonna be a sunny high rather than a dross filled, depression inducing cloudy high!

SunSean next week looks very sunny so fingers crossed we are turning a tide.

Lets hope May, June, July and august are all above average for sunshine, hell let’s chuck in September and October too, we certainly deserve it after all these duller than average months 🌞

Next week alone should get many in the country 80+ hours of sunshine

It’s clear blue skies here currently but only 2c brrr

It’s a decent start this morning with the mist and fog clearing. Sunday and Monday look a write-off with spells of drizzly rain and zero sun keeping temps to 11-13C, things improve into next week. Such a shame the bank holiday curse will strike again down here.

TwisterGirl81 I hope so! I swear though, if us in South East Essex are the only ones to miss out on the sunshine, I'm gonna go absolutely crazy lol.

An above average sunshine May to October would be just the tonic 🙏

Looks like BIG downgrades on this weeks high pressure. Pressure doesn’t build as well and both ecm and gfs have an very cloud day with drizzle and showers affecting Tues, Wed, Thurs and Fri…..as a consequence temps nothing right home about 14-19 if you get any sun.

Nice to have a decent forecast for once. Finally feels like we’ve broken out of the rainy, unsettled pattern.

Alderc 2.0 Potential question marks about Tuesday looking at the fax charts but I can't see rain being an issue after that at all.

Hmm, can't be downgrades surely? Not in the UK, aka Faroe Islands 2.0?

Oh well, I'm sure Scotland & Ireland will be basking in sunshine again while Essex is like November 😂
